What the font industry charges for a font nowadays is nothing compared to how much they charged 10-20 years ago. It wasn't unheard of for Adobe to charge $5-700 for a generic font of theirs
The most ridiculous thing about that is that Myriad comes with CS, which you could buy at roughly the same price (or, ahem, acquire it for much cheaper).

As ridiculous as Adobe's prices are, the places that sell engineering software are even worse. Stuff like CATIA and PRO/Engineer costs 5 digits a seat (I don't know the exact price, but it's definitely "if you have to ask, you can't afford it") and requires a USB dongle to run. Then again, this is stuff with all the necessary approvals and such for aerospace engineering.

If you are semi-competent at even the easiest of the Touhou games, I rather doubt that you will have much trouble with Gradius.
I will also recommend Thunder Spirits to you, it's pretty bossin'.
Relatedly, the ship in Thunder Spirits totally looks like Starscream's jet mode.
