You know what I learned today? Columbus, Ohio's much-hated nickname "Cowtown" is entirely deserved.
When the Statehouse was under construction in the 1840s, the legislators demanded that construction ceased and the foundation that was laid be covered with grass so cows could graze on it. That is: they stopped construction on the state's capitol building and used it for cows.
I dislike extremism in general, although this is problematic because extreme must itself be defined in relation to some other behaviour which may itself be called extreme in some other contexts but yeah. The way I see it there are two ways to be taken seriously, through being understood and respected, and through being dangerous. Both will make you enemies and friends, neither is ideal in all cases.
This has very little to do with the subject at hand, it's just something I find kind of interesting.
Also I just met my third new flatmate. She seemed nice.
You can't be a "good" extremist, because good is not an intrinsic quality. The positions heroes take can be good and extremist, but good isn't a position you can be extreme on because "good" is too vague of a concept.

I always found it strange that the Ohio Statehouse lacks a dome atop it.
The explanation the tour guide gave was this: the building is inspired primarily by Greek architecture, and the architect who designed the roof considered a dome inappropriate because it was reminiscent of Roman architecture.
@Kexruct: Have you ever heard of the Golden Mean Fallacy? A position being extreme doesn't automatically mean it's wrong.

This is true, but taking an absolute and uncompromising stance can make you blind to flaws in your own reasoning and damage caused by your own behaviour.
Also, causing offence doesn't persuade other people to see your point of view, it makes you The Enemy, and The Enemy is to be avoided or eliminated.

^^ I'm just saying that it's silly to judge a position by how "extreme" it is instead of, you know, the actual merits and flaws of the argument.
You do realize that it makes people feel very alone when you always disagree with them? It gives the strong impression that you don't consider as valid anything they have to say.

But he deliberately always disagrees with the majority opinion.
If he's aiming to disagree it's a problem on his end.
The majority opinion is, by virtue of being the majority opinion, assumed to have validity and merit. You don't need to defend your views nearly as much as the outlier does, the widespread acceptance of such is a form of defense.
Your view is the default one, but someone going against the majority has an uphill battle.
In a real discussion of ideas, a true considering and analyzing of ideas; orthodoxy is not threatened by heterodoxy; and the consideration of both can enlighten.
If you want to have a legitimate intellectual analysis of opposing views, then you have to not automatically naysay things that are wrong or contrary to your point of view.
What happens most of the time on the internet is not discussion, it is debate.
^^ Forsythe: Yes, but you are a reasonable person, and one who holds views that don't distance you from others. You fit in with the culture here. You have never been on the recieving end of what I am talking about.

It's not deliberate. I don't like disagreeing with people.
I don't think either view being expressed by Kexruct, SL, Frosty, CA or me really constitutes an "orthodoxy", especially not in the context of the world outside this forum.

I'm not saying this to be contrary, but no. I disagree with just about everyone here on any given issue. I have gotten into debates and arguments with folks here and the reason why it ends at that is because I've been arguing with folks on the internet for a long, long time. I do my best to explain why I take a certain side of an issue and stick with that point. It never gets personal because the way this forum is set up and regulated is it's never allowed to get that far. It takes more than a mild insult to get my dander up.
And as far as me being on "the receiving end", yes I have. In fact I have a picture.
The tall dumbass on the right being ripped apart is me. I still remember that moment, especially the spit and invective flying into my face. So yeah, I've been there.

Bah, I have to go to work in like half an hour.
On the other hand: off for six days afterward! Yaaay :D
And Lazuli, please explain to me what the problem with being a devil's advocate is?
Blah blah things blah.
I have work soon, I don't feel like arguing about something.

Also the toaster here sucks.
Good night SL.

Give the guy some indulgence, for pete's sake!
(I'm not disagreeing with Kexruct, I just want to know why we shouldn't.)
