Is it strange that the 12-year-old in CA screaming "THAT'S SO FUCKING COOL" made me think of the ONN report where lawmakers decided that the death penalty was fucking badass?
My parents have tried to give away my books when I wasn't looking because they thought that I wouldn't notice, and then I'd have more space for new books to read that I would actually read.
At first, I was upset, but when they explained that they were donating them to the library and demonstrated documentation of such, I was okay with it. I can still get to those books, and other people can enjoy them.
I guess it's not really giving away books if you can still find the exact copy of the book you held in your hands at the library.
I have made it clear that there are some books they should absolutely not give away, though. Like any book in a box. If I want to keep a book, I put it back in a box when I'm done with it. Saves space and allows me to find the books I want.

It occurs to me that every rendering I've seen of the Periodic Table of the Elements either (a) is butt-ugly, (b) omits basic information like the full names of each element, or (c) both.
Au and I should collaborate to make a not-ugly version that includes all the information we'd want (atomic number, symbol, name, atomic mass).

Remember back in the 50s when they'd record like Elvis singing YOU AIN'T NOTHIN BUT A HOUND DOG and then they'd turn the record over and reverse it and it was all NYERP NYERP NYERP NYERP NYERP and people were all like, "That is actually the voice of Satan coming from that song."
For what it's worth, most of the periodic tables I've seen use sans serif typefaces. I've seen a couple with serif typefaces, and they looked decently visually appealing to me. But then I'm not the best person to ask about this.

I have four here in front of me (yes, I'm sitting around comparing them).
Two are in Helvetica, one is in Arial, and one appears to be in Century Schoolbook(!). The latter commits the sin of compressing the type wherever the element name is too long (for instance, "Californium".) It also has the text in Helium's square printed a different color, but doesn't provide any key as to what this denotes.
This Helvetica one looks okay, but it omits the names of the elements. I fully admit that I'm a bad nerd, in that I haven't committed all the symbols to memory yet, so that's not very useful to me.
The other Helvetica one is kind of a mess--it has horizontal lines between every piece of information in a square, so they just kinda end up running together. I might scan it later so you can see what I'm talking about.
The Arial one is probably the best, but (a) it's in Arial and (b) it's completely in black-and-white, so I still think it could be improved upon.

So I had the idea of making some kind of Tumblr thing where I roleplay as a ghost who tells other people to "check your life privilege", but I worry about sending the wrong message. I'm afraid people would think I'm making fun of social justice activism as a whole instead of just bad/obnoxious bloggers.
I've never been to Arizona, but I doubt I could actually live there with their government as crazy as it is right now. They make Virginia look navy blue by comparison, and Virginia is very much a swing state...
