It's all about dickwaving. Like with beer. Go mention beer in any internet discussion and I guarantee that within seconds you'll see someone making a comment about how shitty American beer is, and how they only drink a certain ale that's brewed by a half-blind old man in northern Belgium who produces 3 bottles a year at a very princely sum.
Or they brag about drinking something horrible like Arrogant Bastard Ale, which proudly wears its I'M A DICKWAVER label like none other.
But back to the subject at hand, yes, everyone wants to appear sophisticated. At least they can live that fantasy whenever they're just words on a screen to someone else.
I think it's more of a "You have to have some sort of theme, and that's one thing that you know everyone will at least kinda like, or at least be neutral towards".
