...I can't stop thinking about highway rest areas.
  • Living tissue over endoskeleton.
There's a horribly terrible horror movie called Rest Stop that takes place at one of those.

...why did it make me think of Lionsgate?

...I don't even know why I was obsessed with them.

    Anyway, how bad is it?
  • Living tissue over endoskeleton.
It's Warner Bros.' horror studio, Raw Feed.

It's the kind of movie that throws a bunch of stuff at the wall (sadistic hillbillies, ghosts, curses, creepy '50s-esque families, gorn) and manages to make it all yawn-inducing. I needed ocular surgery after all the times it made me roll my eyes.
  • Touch the cow. Do it now.
I have been to so many rest areas in my life...New Mexico ones were the worst.

...sadistic hillbillies sound cool to me.
  • Living tissue over endoskeleton.
They can be, but too often they overdo it. "Look at how CRAZY these guys are!" Texas Chainsaw Massacre does it right.

I want to write a play set in an Interstate rest stop.

The set is the interior of the building, with the men's and women's restroom doors visible, and the "entrance" to the building implied to be stage right. The plot would actually be several smaller stories, each revolving around a different traveler or group of traveler and their travels. Throughout the play, the travelers confide in the rest stop attendant, who is hanging around throughout and sort of acts as the Greek Chorus.

...this is like a productive version of "ABC Inc should buy X", isn't it?

Getting an obsession and wanting to put it to use creatively.

Like how last month ABC Inc wanted to buy Starz!, the exclamation point at the end of whose name it would reinstate ASAP.

For some reason I can picture the scenery vividly, though I don't have any ideas for the plot.

You see, the set shows the interior of a building--the backdrop is a wall, with men's and women's restroom doors that are used throughout the show. The travelers always enter and exit stage right. The only person who enters or exits stage left is the attendant, and he only does so when he's getting supplies from the janitor's closet (or, in one case, when he pretends to get supplies to give two young lovers some privacy).

There is also a pay phone upstage right, near the "entrance", but it is only used in one scene, which ends with the attendant hanging an "out of order" sign on it.

There are a few other props, such as a rack of brochures that the travelers occasionally shuffle through, and the attendant has cleaning supplies, including a broom, a mop and bucket, and a "Restroom Closed for Cleaning" sign he hangs on the women's restroom door at one point.

...I always thought "rest stop/area" was a weird name.

It makes me picture beds in public restrooms.

I could never tell if the term was derived from "restroom" or if it is a reference to the fact that it's a place where travelers can pull off the road and rest for a while.

...You know, ODOT sometimes offers free coffee at their rest stops, to encourage tired drivers to pull off and rest for a bit.

...Coffee being "relaxing" is weird to me, because caffeine is a stimulant.

    ...why drink decaffeinated coffee?

I think that's part of the idea. If you're gonna have tired people driving, might as well load 'em with caffeine before they get back on the road, no?
    ...why drink decaffeinated coffee?
I don't know. I've never understood the idea of decaffeinated coffee.
  • I've learned to tolerate drama...except on the boat
    I don't like coffee.

So as not to continue talking to myself on IRC:

Strange things happen to my subdivision in my dreams.

I used to have a recurring dream where the city would rename the street I live on and post a new sign--usually a blue one, which is bizarre because Columbus doesn't use blue street blades. In the dream I could read the sign and say the name, but when I woke up and tried to picture the sign again it was just gibberish.

Another recurring dream had me finding some street in the back of the subdivision that connected with a "new" subdivision to the north. This is impossible, because the north side of our subdivision is bordered by a railroad track.

...I remember having a dream in which we watched WABC-TV in the living room, Dad still lived here, and Mother worked for WOI-TV in Des Moines. (For some reason I associate them with The Colbert Report now.)
  • Following conversation just happened:

    him: "Do kidneys grow back?"
    me: "No."
    him: "Do lungs?"
    me: "No..."
    him: "..."
me: "Wait, are you The Thing!?"

It seemed like the most reasonable explanation.

    ...who's "him"?
  • Friend of mine named Matt.

Arguably, I should've just typed Matt, but I suppose the logical response to that would be "who's Matt".

I hate snow, but when it snows at night the sky is pink. That made me think of you.

Doesn't matter. Many eras. I just want to see time in action. Sped up, so the changes are powerful and unmistakeable.

I want to see the mortality of all things.

    How fast?
  • Touch the cow. Do it now.
Not sure. Time's pretty big, see. (She's a large lady, no offense meant). If I want to see a large portion of history, we'd need to move quite fast - so fast it would be hard to see anything, really.

Maybe I could do it gradually. Dream a decade a night, or something.
  • I've learned to tolerate drama...except on the boat
So you picture Time as fat too, in addition to buxom?

Well, I hate to break it to you, but outside of anime you are much more likely to find big boobs on ladies who are big all around.

...do you mind if I say something romance-related here?

Heapers, did you know that CA and I are officially boyfriend and girlfriend now?

...I worried we were moving too fast, but it occurred to us that our
relationship was romantic-seeming enough that little would change
    besides that.

    That's wonderful.

...and that's all I can think of to say.
