  • Speaking of Top 40, you know what's weird?

From what I've heard, I kind of like One Direction's sound or whatever (though it could be a little less boy-bandy), but the whole Directioner fanbase is kind of a little ridiculous.
  • Smoke me a kipper, I'll be back for breakfast

top 40 songs are in the top 40 for a reason
Because your average joe has no taaaste
Bitter tears from hipsters sustain me.
  • Any boy-band's fanbase is ridiculous.

I wish Cee-Lo Green was in the top 40 more often. His work with the Goodie Mob is underappreciated and the guy's genuinely talented.

Actually, I'd probably go with marketing and promotion having more to do with it.
  • Eh, speak for yourself.

I didn't even know who OneDirection were until all of the COOL N' EDGY people on my Facebook feed started ranting about how they were killing music.

  • My dreams exceed my real life
    Cee-Lo is pretty cool.

And I like some of Katy Perry's songs.

    Sue me.

I'm not saying that top 40 songs are necessarily bad. Many are good. But I think it's naive to not take marketing, etc. into account as well.

Anyway, this is one of those discussions that never goes anywhere useful
  • I like pop in general, even though admittedly it's starting to get a little strange (hearing "Somebody That I Used To Know" followed by "Call Me Maybe" on the radio is weird, almost schizophrenic).

It's not all I listen to though so ain't no way I'm considered a straight-up teenybopper.
  • when you type in "Cee Lo" into google one of the top search suggestions is "Cee Lo Green's Cat"

He's rather well-known for bringing his cat Purrfect onto his public TV appearances, notably The Voice.

One of the cool things about top 40 stations, back when they still played things that were more than 2 years old anyway, was just how idiosyncratic they could get. Q-94 down in Richmond was an interesting example; they were practically a Hot AC/"at-work" station in the daytime, then went hard CHR after PM drive. Hearing early 1990s house music next to Tom Petty and 1980s synth-pop was weird, man.

Tre: I'm willing to bet a good 50 or so of those pages are from the garbage crusher sequence. We kind of went crazy with that.

The nearest Walgreen's to me is... probably an hour walk at best.

Such are the disadvantages of living in a sprawling suburban area.
  • I never realized how close it was until I went on a bike ride and got lost. Hooray for my lack of any decent direction!

You know, it's probably not wrong, but I still want to punch the person who wrote this.
Interesting read. But I never really considered Wayne much of a "Monarch", it's more of "Evil-capitalist" vs "Good-capitalist".

Even then, some of the things in the article are a serious blow to it's credibility:

Look, you don’t have to be an entertainment junkie, or a critic, to come up with examples of white men, often cops and soldiers, “forced” to go rogue to fight the (usually brown-skinned) evils that threaten family and fatherland. Pretty much every trailer before Dark Knight Rises had some variation on the theme, even the comedyNeighborhood Watch .

Popular media does try to feed on latent racism to get people watching at times, even if it's not in that way.

I don't really see it. I got the distinct impression the "Neighborhood Watch" where composed of people with pretty much nothing better to do or at least one failed cop/solider. The Cops where more than capable of taking care of most  situations in the neighborhood and this group just stumbles on an extraordinary situation.

Basically, it really seems like this guy is cramming a round peg into a square hole. The only underlining theme to Neighborhood Watch is the hope that Ben Stiller is hopefully still funny enough to sell tickets.
  • Jacobin is strange.

Of course, they're over-analyzing the shit out of it, in the manner only a self-described radical can.

...You guys realize I'm talking about his choice of movie and not necessarily his overall accusation at Hollywood, right?

^^I meant the two posts above my first. I'm not going to deny that Hollywood plays on fears of the general public to sell tickets, but I think it's a bit of a stretch to say a comedy about Ben Stiller and a gaggle of other goofy guys stumbling on an Alien crash landing follows the formula of "The common man GOING rogue to defend America!"
  • TUMUT CREW REPRESENT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! tumut
Yeah. I hadn't really noticed racism being used in the rogue cop way anyway.

I think one of the members is "brown skinned" anyhow, if anything, you could make an argument for the movie being Humanity unifying despite differences against a common foe.

That's probably attributing a little too much depth to the movie, as well, but seems less of a stretch.

I'm not saying this harms the overall point, just seems like it's kinda odd thing to go out on a limb on and might draw attention to the fact where the author is seeing patterns that aren't actually there.
  • Touch the cow. Do it now.
You know, I would love to believe that Hollywood constantly churns out movies that are racist, sexist, fascist, every kind of -ist there is, but I very seldom watch movies. So I don't feel qualified to say that.

There seems to be a lot of prescription to malicious intent of what is merely the product of subconscious influence and coincidence.

Eh, It depends on the movie. I think many are trying to fight such stereo types, but many are more than ready to embrace cliches. The "brown menace" was probably a bit more of a thing around a decade ago, but "Arab Terrorist" gets used as a plot device as much as "Rogue Russians" or "Hidden Chinese Agenda" now, I'd say.

Then again, I don't really spend my time analyzing movies for hidden subtext.

Also, with Batman, Ra's Al Ghul and the League of Shadows where already based out of Egypt, if memory serves. The fact that they're "brown" probably has much more to do with Nolan trying to be true to the source material than playing on the fears of the movie going public.

I'd imagine Nolan would view such things as beneath him.
