That said, back in the 1990s, it seemed like S+P was asleep at the switch. Especially at Nick, where a lot of crap got past the radar before they started noticing...choice parts of R&S, and pretty much all of Rocko's Modern Life come to mind.
More like they couldn't see the forest for the trees. They were so busy putting everything under the microscope that stuff in Rocko slipped right by.

The nosy S+P executive finally got a character of their own on WB's "Histeria!" show. The way they handled that was actually pretty damn funny. One episode was discussing the Vestal Virgins and one character pops up with "What's a virgin?" and said character storms in all STOP EVERYONE STOP *record scratch*

You know, a person on John Kricfalusi's blog saying that Sam Simon (co-developer of The Simpsons) was a cartoonist and that that was related to his talent (not in those words but still) made me think of how the creator of Brandy & Mr. Whiskers, Russell Marcus, was a former sitcom writer before that show.
He really must have wanted to cash in on R&S and SpongeBob.
You are the end result of a “would you push the button” prompt where the prompt was “you have unlimited godlike powers but you appear to all and sundry to be an impetuous child” – Zero, 2022
I've heard it said before that writers of shows like Rocko would deliberately write in jokes they knew S&P would reject, to draw attention away from the more subtle "dirty" jokes and let them fly under the radar. Is there any truth to that?

Oh yes indeed, in fact Rocko is now infamous for that
Writing my first real research essay in about a year. In fact, I think it's almost exactly a year since my last research essay.
I keep seeing the names of my professors as I look for references. It's so bizarre. I mean, it's cool that my professors are respected enough to have people ask their opinion on things, but it's so weird to reference people that I've actually talked to in real life.
So does anyone here know of a website with funny written reviews? I'm really bored today, and when I try to play this one game to curb said boredom, I keep getting error messages that Customer Support won't help me with.

I feel like his blog is kind of a guilty pleasure for me; I find it interesting to read his perspective on animation and look at the old stuff he digs up, but sometimes a grumpy-old-man attitude seeps through and it kinda bothers me.

If you were a kid fresh out of the 80's and all the horrible shit cartoons they dished out, you would have found Ren and Stimpy to be the greatest thing since, well, ever. Nowadays the cartoons on the air enjoy the amount of breathing room that R+S bought for them, so looking back they may not seem that special.

It's always weird to see some cartoon I watched as a kid, and realize how stupid it was and yet I didn't know that at the time
I felt like this when I rewatched Tiny Toon Adventures, which used to be one of my favourites. With hindsight, I can't for the life of me figure what I saw in it.
Animaniacs, on the other hand, was better than I remembered it being.

Imi, I feel that way about The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy, at least when it comes to the Grim & Evil-era episodes of it.
It's unsophisticated, shallow, and somehow the art style isn't as well-animated as the similar ones in Dexter's Laboratory or The Powerpuff Girls. The characters aren't very appealing (except for Mandy, and that's partly because she epitomizes the show's mean spirit) and don't have much definition. It's a bit like PB&J Otter if it wasn't supposed to be educational (though that show didn't have episodes like "Little Rock of Horrors" or "Dream a Little Dream", which is a rather fun Fantasia-esque episode).
I also watched an episode of The Real Ghostbusters the other day, which actually wasn't too bad, but had some "ugh, that was dumb" moments. I used to watch it religiously as a kid.

I seem to recall that one freaked me out as a kid. Something to do with ghosts that looked like clowns.
The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy, at least what I've seen of it, is fucking Shakespeare compared to the cartoons I'm talking about.
...I mostly mean the 80s Transformers cartoon
I lived in a sparsely populated area of New Mexico while growing that didn't have TV channels that carried first-run syndicated stuff like Transformers. Not that I'm complaining. I think that was God smiling down on me, preventing me from watching that horrible shit and having to settle with Looney Tunes and Tom and Jerry and Popeye on WTBS (the only cable tv channel we had at the time that carried daily cartoons.)
As a matter of coincidence, it was only later in life that I found out that the little ranching community 20 miles west of us where my cousin lived was where William Hanna was born. Hell, the town still doesn't even know it or they'd try to capitalize on it -- for what it's worth.

Some of the episodes were actually done really well with exceptional dialog. Shitty DiC animation as we know it, but at least the writers were afforded some breathing room.

Also, given the limited TV channels we had, I didn't know about the other Ghostbusters cartoon. Poor Filmation.
Anyway, whenever they adapted something like Ghostbusters to Saturday morning, there's always these silly changes they make to the entire thing that throws it off. That was a Saturday morning rule. They have to include something that took the edge of whatever was cool about the mainstream thing they're adapting.
So when I opened the 1986 Sears Wish Book toy catalog, that's what I assumed had taken place when I saw those weird Ghostbusters toys with the ape and the smiling car.

Capitalizing on being William Hanna's birthplace?
For some reason the idea strikes me as kind of weird, even though I like Tom & Jerry and think that the early H-B product is nice to look at when it's not in motion.
...sometimes I feel frustrated that Time Warner owns possibly the best animation library in the world and yet they don't seem to care about it very much.
Yeah, TTA was a good show, but the biggest issue I saw (and I've said this before about it) is that it just wasn't sure what it wanted to be. Did it want to be clever and funny, dark and edgy, or just a continuation of the same bland humor that ABC and NBC practically enforced during the 1980s? I get the feeling the writers themselves weren't quite sure, and decided to experiment -- they had a 65-episode deal, so why not?
A! knew better what it wanted to do (as did Taz-Mania...that show has nevr been in reruns, to my knowledge, and I miss it), and so it was more consistently entertaining.
And John K. is very much a fan of UPA-style, thick-line madness. His view is that if a cartoon needs to talk, you may as well make a live-action sitcom because clearly no one wants to watch ink-suit comedians. It almost sounds like he thinks any cartoon with lots of dialogue is going to turn into a bland mess like The New Scooby-Doo Movies (which relied on comedian guest stars quite a bit).

Anonus: Well, 70 miles due east is the small town where Waylon Jennings was born, and they make damn sure you know this well before you even see the town's water tower in the distance.
1. So we’ve got these two dudes, both of which were educated in primary school that this is a cat.
2. They see this cat walking by and they’d be like “Oh, that’s a cat, that is.”, and the other would be like “Yeah, I agree with that statement.”
3. 3 years later, they see the same cat walk by, but this time it has a hat on. One of the guys says “Oh look, that’s a cat with a hat on it.” and the other guy is like “SHUT UP, THAT IS NOT A CAT, IT’S SOME FAGGY GAY PIECE OF CRAP, HOW DARE YOU CALL THAT A CAT YOU DON’T KNOW WHAT REAL CATS ARE.”
4. The second guy is an idiot, it’s just a cat with a hat on it.

His work is alright (if polarizing) but I'm not a big fan of his attitude. But he can have it, for all I care.
See, I wasn't allowed to watch R&S as a kid, and when I went back to watch it later on in life, I didn't find it funny.
I found it gross and trying too hard to be edgy, certainly. But not funny.
To each their own.
Personally I find it hilarious but I'm an easily pleased teenager with strange interests so that shouldn't come as a shock to anyone.
Hey guys.
I just got back from a beach-boardwalky roller coaster-y place.
there was laser tags and things too.
it was pretty nifty.
Well I'm not, so I suppose that explains that.

Mandy bothers me, somehow. I feel like we're supposed to side with her, because she's the only character who appears capable of rational thought.

I'm not going to spell it out for you. You know what I'm going to say.
