A technologically mature “posthuman” civilization would have enormous computing power. Based on this empirical fact, the simulation argument shows that at least one of the following propositions is true: (1) The fraction of human-level civilizations that reach a posthuman stage is very close to zero; (2) The fraction of posthuman civilizations that are interested in running ancestor-simulations is very close to zero; (3) The fraction of all people with our kind of experiences that are living in a simulation is very close to one.
If (1) is true, then we will almost certainly go extinct before reaching posthumanity. If (2) is true, then there must be a strong convergence among the courses of advanced civilizations so that virtually none contains any relatively wealthy individuals who desire to run ancestor-simulations and are free to do so. If (3) is true, then we almost certainly live in a simulation. In the dark forest of our current ignorance, it seems sensible to apportion one’s credence roughly evenly between (1), (2), and (3).
Unless we are now living in a simulation, our descendants will almost certainly never run an ancestor-simulation.
Hmmmm... do we attempt to simulate our ancestors, for amusement? I think that we do, with video games and the like. ;] So.......... either we wipe ourselves out, or our lives are the imaginings of a computer? Fun! :D
space I did not see a series of wall kicks, as Mega Man X would do. :p
i think they missed a logical step in their argument there
and i'm sure it's possible to do the wall kicky thing, if unlikely
i wish to come up with a song lyric for this signature, but no song lyrics are coming to mind
i don't really understand the point of giving the simulations actual sentience if they're just going to be simulations and just stimulating sentience from an outward perspective would work better
i get so angry sometimes i just punch plankton --Klinotaxis
The problem I have with it is there's not exactly enough "number of human level civilizations" to make informed hypothesis.
All the propositions seem to be come from fiction math™ based upon the very limited observation material available...namely this ONE planet and the civilization on it.
Jesus, if anyone actually buys into that, I've got a candy wrapper here that's doing a dynamite job of keeping tigers at bay.
Remember back in the 50s when they'd record like Elvis singing YOU AIN'T NOTHIN BUT A HOUND DOG and then they'd turn the record over and reverse it and it was all NYERP NYERP NYERP NYERP NYERP and people were all like, "That is actually the voice of Satan coming from that song."

Assassin poems, Poems that shoot
guns. Poems that wrestle cops into alleys
and take their weapons leaving them dead
It will be called Split Ends.
yeah, i sort of misunderstood the argument the first time i read it. rereading it, it seems more logically sound
this is why rereading things is a good idea
Whoever's running this thing...
I would like my stats boosted
i don't really understand the point of giving the simulations actual sentience if they're just going to be simulations and just stimulating sentience from an outward perspective would work better
...does that make any sense?

Kind of like it. It's nice working outside of the usual meter.
Every. Little. Nuance.
