There was a thread on Vanilla's "Community Support" forum where the developers outright admitted that there is no hard-coded limit on either the number of registered users or the number of users online at a time, and that they pretty much only intervene if it seems like you're mooching off the free plan.
This place doesn't get nearly the amount of activity for it to be an issue, in any event.

I kind of want to move to independent hosting, mainly so I can mess with things, but the only long-term problem would be that we would have to downgrade to an older version of Vanilla since the one we run on now isn't for download for some reason.

I don't know if it's necessarily that this is a later version so much as it is a customized version. Similar to how WordPress.com slightly tweaks their software from a default WordPress installation.
