Admittedly, I didn't like her that much at first, but I watched the episodes in order, and...well, you gotta admit, her character really isn't that great in the first few episodes.

That always kinda bugged me, actually. "Hey kids, if some strange men kidnap you, it's not going to be that bad as long as you remember to brazenly provoke them at every opportunity!"
Admittedly there probably isn't anything good to tell kids about being kidnapped (besides "don't wander off alone in big cities at night" or something), but IMO they probably just should have avoided the topic altogether.

See, I LOVED Rarity in this episode, in fact this is the one that made me relize she was my favorite pony, however I can't help but agree with you here.
Most kidnappers aren't like the diamond dogs and super easy to manipulate through annoying them and are more likely than to beat you up until you can't talk than listen to your crap.
I believe Twilight's letter was something to the extent of "I shouldn't make too many assumptions about people, because they may have qualities I didn't realize." Though that's sort of the same thing she figured out in "Swarm of the Century."
I think the writers just wanted to establish Rarity as smart and socially aware without her coming off as a huge bitch, it worked, but there's definitely some unfortunate implications that came out of the episode.
