I don't like "trigger warnings" because I'm just not sure where to draw the line. I know to put that kind of warning before depictions of extreme violence, self-harm, rape. and the like, but I can't think of many words that couldn't in theory trigger a psychological meltdown for someone.

I have some pictures of a Kroger that was remodeled last year and doesn't have the same ugly decor as every other Kroger around here! I'll post them in a few minutes; they're uploading now.

It seems even Tumblr itself is getting tired of me leaving my blog on the default theme:
I am considering changing it, but I added a bunch of custom CSS to my current theme and I like it too much...
without completely diluting the meaning of "trigger warnings"?
That's the other problem -- they dilute the meaning and impact of everything they go on about in their game of out-doing everyone else of who can be the most outraged about something, no matter how impractical or irrelevant it might be.
It's also kinda condescending. You're basically saying that you don't think people who were traumatized by something will ever be able to get over it.

It must be very empowering to be offended all the time. It's like war; there can be no other reason for certain activities -- in this case embracing offense -- to be so actively pursued unless it just feels good down deep.
This is pretty much it, I think. If you take a look at social justice bloggers as a whole, what they're all outraged over 99% of the time is on someone else's behalf, who probably doesn't know nor ever will know who these angry bloggers are.
I mean, I'm all for social justice, but I've questioned before how it's even possible to just be angry all the time at everything that even sort of offends you. It just doesn't seem healthy or normal. Social justice bloggers are far from the only group who do this, but I see it a lot on the internet and it's disconcerning.

From what I've seen Tumblr social justice blogging is 10% about actually making a difference and 90% about making yourself feel good.

Remember back in the 50s when they'd record like Elvis singing YOU AIN'T NOTHIN BUT A HOUND DOG and then they'd turn the record over and reverse it and it was all NYERP NYERP NYERP NYERP NYERP and people were all like, "That is actually the voice of Satan coming from that song."

The big text makes you sound rather excited about the whole thing.
Looks pretty nice, though some of them seem to be a bit gratuitously revealing (mostly Aurora).
I have seen what I considered a justified trigger warning all of once in my entire life.
How dare people suffer PTSD in response to things that don't bother you!
In other news, I am really starting to loathe the pejorative usage of the term "social justice". I didn't really question it before because I'd seen people I thought it fitted, but really now. Let's mock trigger warnings and safe spaces! These are pointless and hilarious things and widespread societal oppression and lasting psychological/emotional trauma are things you should be able to just get over!

I think you kinda missed the point. People weren't suggesting others "just get over" their trauma, the point was "trigger warnings" is already starting to be over used to the point where it's difficult to tell if someone has a legitimate issue or they just feel entitled to force a desired behavior on other people.
Hence complaints about people self-diagnosing with PTSD and such.

Honestly, my main issue with the social justice bloggers isn't the things they say, but how obnoxious they can be about it. There tends to be an attitude that their views are self-evident and anyone who doesn't think so should fuck off, which bothers me because their causes are (for the most part) good ones and as such they should be attempting to persuade people to support them, not driving away anyone who doesn't already agree.

Things that help PTSD:
therapy
medication
personal strength
time to recover
Things that do not help PTSD:
"hey guys, I'm going to talk about things that are going to depress the fuck out of you now! I'm just going to assume you've never recovered from any bad experiences you've ever had, btw. :D"
If you don't know if they're self-diagnosed, you give them the benefit of the doubt.
I can see the misuse of trigger warnings being a problem, yes, but FFS, I am sick of being in the wrong for "taking shit too literally" because people won't say what they damn well mean. If you don't hate trigger warnings, don't fucking say you hate trigger warnings. Say you hate their misuse.
And when I see safe spaces being compared to racial segregation what the fuck am I supposed to think?

You're not assuming nobody ever recovered, you're being sensitive towards the entirely real possibility that some of your readers haven't recovered and may find your post triggering.

People who complain about trigger warnings on Tumblr seem to miss one very important aspect: There are browser extensions that let you easily block posts with certain tags. If, for example, rape is triggering to you, or hell, even if it just makes you uncomfortable, you can just block the tag "tw: rape" and have it over with. If people don't tag the warnings, you lose that ability.
If you don't know if they're self-diagnosed, you give them the benefit of the doubt.

I have to agree with this. Yes, therapy and medication help PTSD, but being able to avoid an episode is really important in treating it. Giving warning before talking about things like this, that many people have had difficult experiences with--to the extent that reading about them in detail can cause panic attacks, flashbacks, and so on--just strikes me as basic politeness.
(And while I do think it's a shame that "social justice" gets used in a negative way, I think CA has a point. The causes are good, and definitely worth spreading awareness about, but a lot of people get into this passive-aggressive, echo chamber-y mentality where they can only talk about it with people who already agree with them. I could write an essay about this "die cis scum" thing going around tumblr and how bad it is on how many levels, but the thing I've noticed about it is that's most germane to this conversation is that I've only ever seen it used by self-proclaimed "allies".)

Fouria, I'm not saying you may not have some decent points to contribute, but you basically walked into a conversation angry and defensive. I'm having trouble discerning what's a valid point and what's something being took a bit out of context.
