CA, I really don't think that deliberately limiting the things you allow yourself to say is constructive.

If you want to express political opinions, express them. As long as you're not rude about them (which I sincerely doubt you would be) I don't think most people (certainly not me) would think less of you, and anyone who does is honestly probably not worth your time anyway.

I mean, Naney and I are ideologically opposed, politically speaking, and I still like him.

    Ugh, I worry too much, don't I?
  • Smoke me a kipper, I'll be back for breakfast
I just worry that if I say something like "I believe the US should have
universal healthcare", without already having a whole list of arguments
ready to defend my position, I'll immediately get smacked down by the
people who disagree with that position.
Just tell them that they'll get a better system for less money :p

  • ^You really shouldn't jump to conclusions like that. Naney is a fiscal conservative as far as I know, not a social one. He might just identify as conservative because the economic part is more important to him or something.

I wonder how many other people enjoy reading parts of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.

The book's full of jargon and pseudo-legalese; sometimes even I have a hard time believing I enjoy it.

Well, I'd be lying if I said I found the subject of traffic lights all that interesting, but I'm sure there are plenty of people who do, just logically speaking. The world is an enormous place, after all, and approximately seven billion people live on it. I have to imagine at least a couple thousand of those people are interested in traffic lights.

    Ugh, I worry too much, don't I?

You do seem to worry quite a bit, to be honest.

"Center" US politics look a lot like our "moderate right" so that seems like an odd concern to me.  But it's an illusion and the left-right spectrum is still just a model that doesn't accurately reflect reality; the countries have different values and individuals have varying opinions anyway.

And I figure that no matter what you think somebody will think less of you for it because that's what happens.  But not everybody.

Fouria, my sis has told me before that I should be a British person because of my socialist political beliefs. I thought maybe you would be amused by this. :]

Ooh, and then we could get angry at the Labour party together!

You really shouldn't jump to conclusions like that. Naney is a fiscal liberal, not a social one.

Why isn't Naney socially liberal? :o

And chooses to identify as conservative, presumably because of this.

I really don't see a problem with that, and am not sure why you feel the need to try to argue the point. I didn't even mention him as anything but an example anyway.

Opinions are sacred things, in the expression of them though, you'll find a wonderful joy, not only will the like-minded find themselves a place to nest, but you'll see that others will look for your opinion when it becomes a relevant piece of modern placement.

But remember, there's great power in opinions, power that can used for diabolic purposes.

    Like trees.

This is something that I always found quite puzzling since poverty has a crippling effect on social freedoms, but FM knows more about economics than me so I never questioned it.  Maybe I should ask or start a thread or something...

As for traffic manuals, I've dipped into the DFT Traffic Signs Manual and thought it was moderately interesting, but it didn't hold my attention for that long.  Maybe when I have some free time I'll try again.

Also Fouria has a Limbo avatar.

I find this to be coolish.

    Yay, you recognized it! :D

(Limbo is awesome and seems like something I think a lot of other Heapers might enjoy, incidentally.)

I don't like fiscal conservatives because they preach laissez-faire and for my GCSE history course, we studied what the social and economic affects of laissez-faire had on 19th Century Britain. Heres a hint, Charles Dickens covered a lot of it in stuff like Oliver Twist, Hard Times and Little Dorrit.

    Good night Lazuli.
  • imagei will watch the heck outta this pumpkin patch
Dickens was writing with an agenda, but yes.  But I think fiscal conservatives are rather too broad a group to paint with a single brush.

    Night Lazuli.

Admittedly, the big part of the appeal of the MUTCD, at least at first, is clicking through and just looking at the pictures. There's a lot of diagrams in there that are cool to look at, like this one or this one.

Right now, though, I'm going through and reading about the standards for traffic signal operation. There's a huge list that defines the meanings of every possible indication: steady green ball, steady green arrow, steady yellow ball, flashing yellow ball...they even make a point to mention that a flashing green light "has no meaning and shall not be used."

How do you feel being quoted, is it nice? is it :3
  • imagei will watch the heck outta this pumpkin patch
I am trying to be less charitable towards good intentions.  A lot of stupid things that I and other people I know have been criticized for and which upset a lot of people happened because we were too nice to well-intentioned idiots and troublemakers.  And I learned the hard way that having good intentions doesn't usually make other people any more forgiving, either.

(But FM is a really nice guy and not stupid so that doesn't apply here.  I just mean generally.)

Also: I cannot access the MUTCD website for some reason, which is slightly bugging me.

That misattributed quotes create broken links?

Properly attributed quotes create broken links, too, actually. It seems the quote plugin expects a different URL syntax than what we actually have. -_-

I thought I was banned for a second when the website got all borked for me.

Did you get the fatal error when trying to access database blah blah thing too?
  • I think, design wise, letting a forum-goer know that they're banned is much better than tossing them about, after all, you want them gone, so let them know they're banned!

    Yup

^Hey, some of us like being tossed about

  • imagei will watch the heck outta this pumpkin patch
Nonsense, the best approach is clearly to redirect them to Google.

Or to keep them around but block them from opening threads or reading their messages.
