Just one of my friends from school.
  • nah man that's what facebook is for.

Tumblr is for like, your group of friends that you're actually friends with.

  • You are the end result of a “would you push the button” prompt where the prompt was “you have unlimited godlike powers but you appear to all and sundry to be an impetuous child” – Zero, 2022
I feel like I have no room to talk here...I'm always talking as if I'm a pony. *shrug*

I'm actually friends with her though. (and I don't have a Facebook.)

She can be a frustrating person to deal with but she's usually nice.

    No, like she
literally believes she is a cat. A birdcat, to be specific.
  • I know she's my friend because today she fell asleep on my stomach.

I hear things to this effect a lot but have never understood the idea myself.

If I find someone frustrating I generally keep them at an arm's length and deal with them only when I can't avoid doing so.

I suppose this is probably why I don't have many friends.

ok are you sure she isn't like literally a cat

Yeah, well...I keep trying (with limited success) to control traffic lights with my mind so I can get home faster. So ha.

    shit, i'm being out-weirded by a 15-year-old on tumblr

the solution to this problem is to call P.O.S.

No i am the only person who is literally a cat.
  • You aren't literally a cat Naney. I've read your class-room books, your literature is definitely C++.
  • “I'm surprised. Those clothes… but, aren't you…?”
^^ What of Zersk? I am fairly certain that he is at least some of the time.
  • “I'm surprised. Those clothes… but, aren't you…?”
Naney, are you running some secret cat cabal on the Internet without my knowledge?
  • “I'm surprised. Those clothes… but, aren't you…?”
    I KNEW IT.

    SHOW ME YOUR RITUALS.
  • “I'm surprised. Those clothes… but, aren't you…?”
Excellent. I shall use it well.

I hope they don't sell, but Tumblr being an acquisition target has been rumored for a while...

Yahoo! kind of lets things just stagnate, don't they?

    THIS MACHINE KILLS FASCISTS
The thing is, Yahoo! has been around so damned long (I remember it being well-established in 1995) that they probably think there's nowhere else to go. The Web directory that made them famous at first has long since been replaced by smarter search engines.
  • I still have a Yahoo email account.

YNTKT, but I'm pretty sure the admins already do anyway.
  • I do too, just because I don't really feel like getting new ones.
  • I've learned to tolerate drama...except on the boat
The only things about them that are really relevant are Answers and Flickr. Yahoo! Answers is, however, a laughingstock, and Flickr is not a big name anymore, having been superseded by Imgur and Instagram...though I think Flickr is aimed more towards professional/hobbyist photographers than Imgur and Instagram are.
  • I doubt the Yahoo buyout will change much.  I mean, tumblr's not exactly well-run in the first place.  If anything, this'll delay their spiral.
  • I've learned to tolerate drama...except on the boat
Admittedly I had thought of that...

If Yahoo! does improve anything, they need a "Sent Fan Mail" viewer, and the ability to search for more than one tag at a time.

    That's what I'm hoping too.

Tumblr's developers are pretty incompetent as-is, so there's a good chance that being under Yahoo! would essentially be a lateral move as far as quality goes.

But at the same time, there's so much that could go wrong...
  • I wouldn't call them incompetent, though. They are the ones who made Tumblr the way it is now in the first place, after all.

It's not an entirely smooth site, though, especially considering how popular it is (and became in a short period of time; I'd first heard of it in 2010 and only really seen it mentioned in any sort of news media last year).

Honestly, I'm not very technically-inclined so I don't notice many bugs (other than the fact that in the last few weeks, my scroll bar doesn't appear on the Dashboard or any other "feed" pages anymore)...
  • Anonus said:

I agree. But it's still kind of unfair to call the people who made it incompetent.

    Feel kind of guilty.
The first time I unfollowed someone it was a spambot, so I don't know that feel.

...why were you following a spambot in the first place?

Thought it was a legitimate poster.

...ok, it was a women's lingerie spambot.

I feel that Tumblr's popularity is not due to David Karp's design so much as the fact that it basically combines Livejournal with Twitter, which basically covers lots of niches.

Granted, it's not entirely dumb, but the clever things about it that made it what it is today are basic social engineering rather than any sort of understanding of web design.

It also manages to cancel out a lot of the more restrictive aspects of those two formats' designs in favour of something more open and customisable, so that is a boon in its own right.

I think of Tumblr as "Twitter, but better".
  • “I'm surprised. Those clothes… but, aren't you…?”
    Much better.

Seriously, Twitter is... well, it has a function, and it can be useful, but Tumblr is still leagues more interesting in basically every way.

    (flower path)
Honestly, I've begun to appreciate Twitter more and tumblr less.  This is partially because bitlbee means I can read tweets in my IRC client, and partially because retweets only show up once instead of an unbounded number of times as everyone reblogs each other.

Mentally unstable fandom addicts and porn are fabulous sources of income, thank you very much!
  • If they were stable fandom addicts, do you really think you could milk them for money? Of course not.
