empathize might be the more correct word

like you can see where they're coming from, but that's not the same thing as wanting to get a vacation home there
  • Well to them it's a safe space where they aren't judged for doing things such as trash-talking like mad and throwing sexist insults willy-nilly.

It's a thing I disagree with but can sympathize with.

Those so-called "SJWs" are not helping in being harshly critical.  Rather, they should be easing the transition.

Just kill all math nerds, they'll stop agitating, only idiots are left

what is with you and hating "math nerds" srsly

and i keep on forgetting what it is you actually mean by "math nerds"
  • imagei will watch the heck outta this pumpkin patch
i find it hard to empathize with this, honestly.

i'm not just saying this to be argumentative, i really find it incredibly difficult to see why they feel the way they do here.  It just seems purposefully nasty.

some people are just mean by nature, and value the idea of a space where they can freely be mean to other people without consequence.

It is understandable in a twisted sort of way, but it's not healthy and it's not desirable for anyone but them. It's like arguing racists should be left alone as long as they don't actually kill anybody, except Gamergaters have actually tried to kill people.

I miss the old antinatalists. They had a level of curmudgeonly honesty. That's all dead, rotted away in favor of whitebread whining about minorities.

It's a "stop shining bright lights on me and judging me" thing.

It's like if I came to your door one day and highlighted how you're living your life wrong, in front of all your neighbors.  And worst yet, I have a point.  Or many.

Regardless of how good my point it, it probably won't feel good to be you.

And i think if feminist critics are 'gentle' and 'ease' the transition no change will occur and the environment will continue to be a sexist one.

Also bigotry justifies anger more than most things, and the industry is not a delicate thing that needs protecting from the mighty critics.
  • THIS MACHINE KILLS FASCISTS
so, the type of people that use cold, unfeeling math to justify things that are quite nasty when you examine them closely

Math nerds don't use math. They use game theory. Math is too sacred.
  • but then isn't "math nerd" the wrong term
  • imagei will watch the heck outta this pumpkin patch
Critics aren't, or weren't, judging gamers.  They were judging the games, and the games were blatantly sexist.  Sometimes racist.  Sometimes both.

The gamers proceeded to make it about themselves and now they are being scrutinized, but they weren't really before, not by the critics who actually care about games (i am obviously not referring to Jack Thompson and his ilk).
  • game theory nerds?
  • My dreams exceed my real life

but then isn't "math nerd" the wrong term

No. For you see, math is the mien in which they live and breathe. Would you call a whale a land animal just because it beaches itself?

Yeah, that's basically the gist of it.
  • Also note how none of this has ANYTHING to do with whether Zoe Quinn slept with five journalists.

i think this was just seized upon as an excuse

none of the journalists named by her ex ever reviewed her game, it's a complete red herring

well i don't like being painted with that broad brush just for liking math

i can't speak for ponicalica though

    Yeah, that

all the fish, in fact, most of whom don't do that thing

I think that most people who enjoy those games are genuinely unaware of why they may seem alienating to people who don't share their mindset. It's pretty easy to get stuck in a mental echo chamber where everything you enjoy is surely hospitable to everyone if they just open up their minds to it.

This leads to them assuming that people criticize those games just to spite them, because surely that's the only reason that someone would dislike things of such undeniable quality.

I don't agree with this mindset at all, but I can understand it.
  • ^ I suspect that's the case.

but then what is the correct term to refer to people who really like math and are totally immersed in it?

Honestly, what you call "math nerd" just sounds to me like "philosophy nerd who is a wannabe math geek".

it's really simple, actually: just ignore Panurge when he starts going nuts over "math nerds"
  • imagei will watch the heck outta this pumpkin patch
    so for 'math nerd'

    what about 'insight wankers'

    it's a pun, see,
  • imagei will watch the heck outta this pumpkin patch
i don't really expect you to adopt that term

    but it amused me
  • My dreams exceed my real life
    Oh, that's a good replacement.

I will do that in the future.
  • They don't have to like name-dropping famous philosophers to like philosophy.  It sounds like they're debating values and ideas so they're talking philosophy anyway, just not in typical ways.

i feel like to 'like philosophy' you have to actually be interested in the discipline, not just giving your own opinions and rubbishing everyone else's.
  • Point.  They don't "like philosophy", they're just "talking philosophy".
  • My dreams exceed my real life
Also they like insight wank, which is best described as a shitty science aggregator.
  • imagei will watch the heck outta this pumpkin patch
Also yeah, for these people 'philosophy' is a dirty word.

Insight wankers like science, and purest, most irrefutable reason.
