  • Yeah. I mean, I don't think he has any redeemable qualities, but I still like his character. It's reasonably well written.

huh, i forgot that we knew what Dirk could do already

We only know a little of what Dirk can do through inference. He was able to not only be awake on Derse and Earth at the same time, but has weird, self-aware doppelgängers in the forms of AR and Brain Ghost Dirk. Considering how Calliope mentioned that the Prince of Heart has the power to destroy or fracture (with) souls, this seems to be a part of his power.

As a character, Cronus is interesting to watch because he is a study in self-aggravating flaws. He is selfish, thoughtless and arrogant, but did not become malignantly so until he lost his source of hope (see Eridan for parallels) and his increasingly desperate, irksome behaviours pushed everyone else away. He made himself a little helpless monster through his own weakness.

At least in his death, after being confronted with his own cruelty and its effects, Eridan was able to get over this and become a better person. Cronus never had that chance, so he became something really disgusting. That is really interesting character writing.
  • Homestuck has a lot of really interesting character writing really.
  • “I'm surprised. Those clothes… but, aren't you…?”
It does. On the surface, it is extremely silly... and it is. But there is a lot going on with these terribly silly people.

More people have said that and been killed than there are thorium decay products.
I should really read this story huh?
It is not everyone's thing but I recommend giving it a good try if you like fantasy stuff. The story is slow in the beginning but it gains momentum as it goes along. It is very long and dense, just a warning. ^_^ If you feel intimidated, I like to link new readers to the table of contents so they know how far along they are.

hmmm re: the upd8: there is a definite commentary on gender roles here.

Don’t ask me why I ship dirkjake.

but it is imaginary dirk not real dirk saying these thinngggggssssssssssss >.<
  • “I'm surprised. Those clothes… but, aren't you…?”
^ It's your fault that I ship AR/Equius now! All your fault!
  • ...fuck

what if Jake eventually actually manages to make Imaginary!Dirk real and they become an item

    “I'm surprised. Those clothes… but, aren't you…?”
    Then Dirk courts everyone.

    Sort of.

    Prince of Heart, yo.
  • also that would reinforce Jake's self-centered tendencies in a rather strange way
  • “I'm surprised. Those clothes… but, aren't you…?”
It could, and that would be bad. If Jake is going to get with anyone, it should be someone that can put him in a position where he really has to think about someone besides himself.
  • true that, although i think that would depend on what qualities imaginary!dirk would have if he was physically manifest..
  • Living tissue over endoskeleton.
This update gave me 4000 notes.

That's really the only good thing I have to say about it.
  • the update gave me 4.

    so HA
  • “I'm surprised. Those clothes… but, aren't you…?”
^^ Really, the only good thing?
  • Living tissue over endoskeleton.
    Yes, really.
  • Seamus was very critical about Jake's realistic reaction to the thought of becoming a sex slave to his friend-turned-dictator being played for laughs.
  • I don't think it was entirely played for laughs, though. I thought the reaction was written in a humorous way, but I doubt Hussie was unaware of the darker implications.
  • Living tissue over endoskeleton.
Yeah, but what's the point? What about the threats of rape (cause let's be real, that's what it was) were needed for the joke of "Jake is scared" to work?
  • It wasn't entirely a joke, though. That's what I'm saying.
  • And if anything, this reminds me more of Amazon Women in the Mood than a rape joke.
  • Living tissue over endoskeleton.
I know. I'm saying there's no point in having it there, even if it was a joke. It adds nothing and detracts a whole lot.
  • I honestly do not think it was a joke at all really
  • ...And even when your hope is gone
move along, move along, just to make it through
    (2015 self)
I haven't read updates since Tavros v John over Wedding Ring for Vriska.

I don't like this idea of rape jokes.
  • I know. I'm saying there's no point in having it there, even if it was a joke. It adds nothing and detracts a whole lot.

It is actually pretty interesting IMO as a reflection of her LET'S HAVE BABIES thing when she was in trickster mode
  • "Adds nothing?" It's an entirely new motivation for two characters. Jane wants Jake to rule by her side and use him as a slave, Jake decidedly wants to avoid this.
  • ...And even when your hope is gone
move along, move along, just to make it through
    (2015 self)
Wait, dirk and Jane are both in love with Jake?
  • edited 2013-08-19 22:41:15

^ Dirk broke up with Jake a while back.
  • More people have said that and been killed than there are thorium decay products.
I didn't think there was any "rape humor" here? Jake does get abused by characters a lot, sometimes for humor (like the Vriska/Tavros thing); whether it is in bad taste is subjective I think. I do not think it is very tasteful but I don't find it offensive either.

    Oh.
  • “I'm surprised. Those clothes… but, aren't you…?”
It is a reversal of the classic "evil overlord threatens the helpless princess" scenario that very consciously seems to be highlighting the more disturbing aspects of that trope. The humour lies in the over-the-top the execution and the irony of the situation rather than the actual content, which is clearly monstrous.

I would also add that Jane's planned treatment of Jake is uncannily similar to the Condesce's abuse of the Helmsman, down to the creepy sadistic overtones.

Which could have been done without the rape overtones.

Like, I thought a "rape joke" was a joke where the punch-line or the subject of the joke is rape.
  • More people have said that and been killed than there are thorium decay products.
When I said this upd8 was commentary on gender roles, part of that was the 'role reversal' of male-on-female abuse, which I think is a subtle way of highlighting it. This includes the "rape overtones," which I did not feel were supposed to be funny?

I have very much the same feelings.

    ...who is the "Daughter"?
  • also fwiw i have seen nobody who thought it was intended to be a joke

this upd8 was literally crockertier jane telling jake that he was going to be her trophy husband and sex slave and he has no worth outside of his physical appearance there is nothing even remotely amusing about that

this is the only mention of it on my dash

    ^ Yes.
I don't know why I find "stealin' yo man/stealin' yo girl" posts so funny.
  • The Condescence/Helmsman parallel was one of the better things about the update.

While nobody on your dash is making fun of it, Pangur, you must remember that you have culled most of the awful out of your dash. Tumblrites in the upd8 tag are all too fascinated with finding comedy in the situation.

Probably because they're usually accompanied with a gif along these lines
