They're intellectually dishonest cowards, and this is yet another example of that.
The only angle of this that would work would be if ignoring Trump were a pointed statement about the nature of ignoring Trump, which, I admit, could be the angle they end up going for, but I doubt it.

I feel like if we've reached this point, it's time to cancel South Park.
Between South Park and Nick's two long-runners, it's pretty clear that if Viacom has a prize horse in their animated lineups, they'll beat it till it's dead and then some

I think the proper response to Donald Trump is to treat him as a footnote, or at best, as just some other piece of vaguely-uninteresting news.
He likes to dominate news cycles, discussions, attention, and so forth. Don't let him do this when he wants to.
Instead of talking about his flamebait, let's talk about his unintentional blunders, as well as everything that does not involve him directly. Such as Scott Pruitt wrecking drinking water quality protections, or France's new president getting pushback for being a bit too arrogant, or the Tories in the UK losing their majority, or how the opioid drug abuse problem is getting more attention these days which is a good thing.
That reminds me of MAD Magazine making a "No Trump In This Issue, We Promise" issue, due to the fact that fans were getting tired of hearing about him and wanting to see satire or topics on something else, literally anything else.

It's not good to just outright ignore him, seeing how his antics can literally kill people right now.
That said, a bit of variety in the comedy shows at the moment is a good thing. It's not good to let the asshole literally dominate everything, even if it is to run him further into the ground.

It's not like South Park has been funny in years anyway.

But that's not gonna happen, of course.
