I guess I'm more sensitive to this stuff than you are. To me, Looney Tunes cartoons, and especially not this weird smooth animation, do not have the same visceral immediacy as the H-B stuff...
That sequel was actually based on one of the books rather than being a hare-brained idea that the studio came up with. Apparently, it's reasonably faithful, too? I'm not entirely sure, having not read them.
Incidentally, the author of the books was a very well-respected and avant-garde speculative fiction author and poet, Thomas Disch. He committed suicide a few years ago, sadly.
