ones with weird ATK/DEF denominations. Like, ending something in "50" in a game that has HP in the thousands is just cheeky, but then you got really weird shit like one or two cards with values that ended in 75, and one I remember vividly that had 1015 as its ATK.

HEY SO I FOUND OUT WHY THIS HAPPENED
turns out that those cards were printed after appearing in the show, and in their only appearance, were being buffed by a (fictional) field spell card to have their stats increased by 30%. Yeah not fixed values, percent.
So when they were printed they ended up with weird stats.

It was initially heavily based on Magic The Gathering but they've diverged a lot over the years.
Whoever told you that was a big ol' nerd.
I liked its early mechanics and general aesthetic a lot more appealing than whatever it is now... or has been for the past, like, at least ten years.
