    i should note i've been using the kind of broad definition of high fantasy Sredni seems to be using, rather than the more specific one Mach has in mind

    to use Tolkien's terminology, i meant any fantasy which wholly takes place in a secondary world

    though primarily i guess i was thinking of European-influenced fantasy in an imaginary pre-industrial setting, which is a much narrower subgenre

    Yes. Setting doesn't determine whether something can be interesting.
