Because everyone who's tackled Batman so far has been a very self-indulgent director who by the end of their run with the character were successful enough that they didn't need to control their indulgences anymore.
I suspect that Ben Affleck's run on Batman will end up the same way.

I'm terrified that WB is gonna WB up its follow-ups (that means turning them into hollow cash grabs! They're even WB-ing up fucking Archie, ask Section)
well, by all accounts The LEGO Movie looked like a hollow cash grab until the movie itself came out, but Lord/Miller managed to make it into an actually amazing movie, and I haven't seen 21/22 Jump Street but it seems they have the same property, so the sequel will probably not be one as long as they're working on it.
