Probable causes for the decline of showbizzy pop culture humor in US TV animation

Include:

  • The death of the monoculture
  • Nerds getting into animation, and lacking interest in American mainstream culture
  • An attitude that Hollywood and its culture are not to be celebrated
  • Classic American animation (anything up to the early '70s) not providing inspiration to many contemporary cartoon creators

A tad. The song from the cider episode was transparently lifted from The Music Man.

It wasn't the first time they did something like that either.

off the top of my head i recall there being some fairly obvious nods to Looney Tunes, a couple gags that clearly owed something to Ren & Stimpy, a blatant reference to The Big Lebowski and a dig at the MLP G3 cartoons
  • Also a noir episode (with Rarity playing two parts at once), an episode that was a parody of Topgun, a fucking DBZ fight in the season 4 finale.  The songs in general are pretty 90's Disney, too.

Like, this isn't even getting into how crazy the comics go with references.  It went like two pages before Pony Donald Sutherland doing a Body Snatchers gag.
  • Touch the cow. Do it now.
is there any US TV animation besides My Little Pony?

I'm still excited about Rarity going Pullet Marlow
