Cyberpunk is also pretty 80s. It stretched into the 90s, for sure; but, eg, Neuromancer was '84.
Still, I'd be pretty annoyed if that were the case and then everyone just went with the aesthetic instead of having anything to say about corporate power. The world needs no steampunk successors. (Hell, the world doesn't need steampunk.)
Regular cyberpunk is alright but it's a bit too gloomy for my tastes. (Most of the time. I'm willing to make exceptions for Good Stuff that adheres to the traditional style.)

it's overplayed, i guess
it never really broke into the mainstream but geek culture got kind of oversaturated with it
