I'm starting to enjoy Power Rangers

I've been watching Mighty Morphin Power Rangers so that Cirque du Yogi could make fun of it and also have a giant robot.

And I admit I am enjoying the way it's basically a televised B-movie mixed with the Japanese flair for ridiculous shit.

What's happening?

  • Touch the cow. Do it now.
    your tastes continue to decline
  • I've learned to tolerate drama...except on the boat
I'm supposed to disdain Haim Saban and everything he stands for!

Also when did they start declining? Were they ever "good"?
  • I've learned to tolerate drama...except on the boat
but for real, the Super Sentai footage makes me wish Haim had just flown THAT in without any of this new shit around it
  • Touch the cow. Do it now.
    ...good question.
  • “I'm surprised. Those clothes… but, aren't you…?”
Look up some actual tokusatsu stuff. You might dig it. I know my mom was big on Ultraman when she was young.
  • I've learned to tolerate drama...except on the boat
fuck it I should just watch shitloads of Kamen Rider and Super Sentai

    praise be to Japan
  • “I'm surprised. Those clothes… but, aren't you…?”
Yes! Join us hopeless weebs and be one with our demoniac masse! 0vvvvvvvv0
  • I've learned to tolerate drama...except on the boat
Genndy Tartakovsky and Rebecca Sugar are weebs

Dexter's Laboratory had 73 episodes involving giant robots
  • I've learned to tolerate drama...except on the boat
but truly this no-budget sitcom framing is alternately amusing and tedious

one of its pluses is that Walter Jones has some serious dance moves
  • I've learned to tolerate drama...except on the boat
also the principal looks like Arthur Blank, founder of The Home Depot and owner of the Atlanta Falcons
  • I've learned to tolerate drama...except on the boat
this episode is literally called "Food Fight"

also one must wonder how Rita Repulsa stands to do nothing but watch the Power Rangers

also Rita Repulsa hanging around her moon lair demanding her henchman make monsters for her reminds me of Simon Bar Sinister hanging around his 400 year old house hatching plots to do evil
  • I've learned to tolerate drama...except on the boat
    this food fight is tedious

please get back to the pig monster
  • I've learned to tolerate drama...except on the boat
"It appears that Rita has unleashed a ravenous pig upon the Earth. Its sole purpose is to eat."

    "...this pig must be stopped."
  • I've learned to tolerate drama...except on the boat
pig monster is eating their weapons
  • I've learned to tolerate drama...except on the boat
also I have no idea why the dude dubbing the Red Ranger's voice sounds nothing like Jason, unless this is Jason's actor trying too hard to sound "authoritative"

I remember the future Red Rangers sounding less...bad
  • I've learned to tolerate drama...except on the boat
there are 54 more episodes after this
  • I've learned to tolerate drama...except on the boat
    in this season
  • We can do anything if we do it together.
I just watched the first episode of Power Rangers and I am kinda baffled by how Saved By The Belly it is.

I've intended to watch Kamen Rider Gaim for a while now, but I know that's kinda, erm, different from what we're talking about.
  • I've learned to tolerate drama...except on the boat
At the time Saban bought Power Rangers back from Disney, the show had 700 episodes (not counting the 2010 "re-versioning" of MMPR that existed solely to be the franchise's swan song before Disney buried it forever)

    Holy shit
  • I've learned to tolerate drama...except on the boat
oh god this chicken monster is accompanied by a menacing rock version of Old McDonald
  • I've learned to tolerate drama...except on the boat
seeing the Rangers just do martial arts and stunts in casual situations is amazing
  • Sup bitches, witches, Haters, and trolls.

    Holy shit
well, on the Japanese side, it's more like there were 30 or so shows each with 50 episodes; the different Super Sentai and Kamen Rider series feature a different hero or set of heroes each year.
  • I've learned to tolerate drama...except on the boat
oh my god they are driving a flying VW Bug, which was in Super Sentai too

    I know that

    I'm just getting Archive Panic
  • Sup bitches, witches, Haters, and trolls.
Ultraman X, which is airing right now and is on Crunchyroll, features flying Nissan Leafs

oh my god Rita's flying over on her big bike thing

as far as the Japanese shows go, nobody watches everything, especially since most of the older stuff hasn't even been subtitled (and a lot of more recent stuff only has bad TVN -sama-chan-tachi subs)
  • I've learned to tolerate drama...except on the boat
also for some reason in Japan things rarely get reran
  • I've learned to tolerate drama...except on the boat
I have no idea why Bulk and Skull keep trying to start shit when they invariably end up embarrassed
  • I've learned to tolerate drama...except on the boat
this show wasn't designed for binge viewing

my mind is too zapped to even enjoy the Super Sentai segments
  • I've learned to tolerate drama...except on the boat
gdi i need to watch Gundam or something
  • I've learned to tolerate drama...except on the boat
    need more giant robots
  • I've learned to tolerate drama...except on the boat
I know in America we think giant robots are awesome but in Japan they were a complicated metaphor for nukes

this dude looks like a less red-haired Dr. Quest
  • I've learned to tolerate drama...except on the boat
the ninth episode of the first season is next

I'm so tempted to spend the next day or so binging the first season of MMPR but that's a bad use of my time

    okay I'm leaving it now

nah the Japanese mostly think giant robots are awesome too, it's just that Tomino wanted to do a serious war story while his superiors wanted giant robots and three and a half decades later plastic models based on these serious war stories are known for printing money
  • Power Rangers used to be my very favorite thing, but if I tried to watch it now it would probably destroy me.

Although maybe I'm just tired or brain shit is happening but I was able to watch this without cringing, so:

  • "Dammit Alpha, these aren't teenagers with attitude!  They're the most well-adjusted and socially active teenagers I've ever seen!"
  • I've learned to tolerate drama...except on the boat
PUMPKIN RAPPIN' IS ABOUT TO HAPPEN

you must find this monster before he ripens

also holy shit that's so old there's a Fox network bug in the corner (it's hard to discern)

This. Also, I kinda wanna get into Kamen Rider myself, but I have no idea wehere to start. I also need to finish Gundam 0079 and watch Zeta. Iron-Blooded Orphans as well, if that's already started airing, which a cursory google search reveals that... it has!

Start with W/Double, most of our generation has.

yeah, start with W, use the W-Time/Over-Time subs
