"The entitlement generation"

Where did this shit come from?

Also, I kind of dread when in 20-30 years, members of our generation start attacking the generation after us

    nope

I think the same things were said about "Generation X"
  • My dreams exceed my real life
Entitlement is the best way to dismiss legitimate grievances and concerns.
  • people who buy into a narrative that arbitrary "generations" of people are fundamentally different from others are morons and i would not listen to them
  • Touch the cow. Do it now.
this is just standard "old man yells at cloud" stuff

I don't necessarily, but it just seems like so much reactionary, RL flamebaity content is brought to my attention
  • Sup bitches, witches, Haters, and trolls.

also there's a lot of bitching about smartphones and "whining" and I think "like you aren't thinking 'where was this stuff when I was your age'" or "don't all young people whine"
  • I don't think this generation is the entitlement generation.

If anything this is the lack of faith generation.
  • ...And even when your hope is gone
move along, move along, just to make it through
    (2015 self)

This generation is awful and I hate it.

  • Man is a most complex simple creature: see what he weaves, and how base his reasons for doing so.
What even exists in this world that is worth believing in?

All the great dreams are dead, and the dreams that remain are about surviving and navigating a peace and a place within this chaotic world.
  • I believe in cats
  • Man is a most complex simple creature: see what he weaves, and how base his reasons for doing so.
All the great dreams are dead, and it was a just and deserved death.

We would all do well without foolish and evil dreams.
  • that is bologna, there is no greater possible dream than cats
  • Man is a most complex simple creature: see what he weaves, and how base his reasons for doing so.
It's a small dream, and perhaps still a worthy one.

    Small's good. Small's doable.

There is no room for evil in small.

Hint: you don't get to condemn any generation for being "emo" if your generation had Sandman.
  • Youth were never more sawcie, yea never more savagely saucie
  • I have cut a caper with the dancing mad god

  • Know your lines? Of course you know your lines! But I don't want to just hear your lines...I wanna hear what's in YOUR SOULS!!
This is why I hate the word "millenials"
  • What even exists in this world that is worth believing in?

All the great dreams are dead, and the dreams that remain are about surviving and navigating a peace and a place within this chaotic world.

Only some of them are dead. Some merely sleep.

The distinction is almost inconsequential, but only almost

This is beside the point but...that last one. It's always bizarre when people treat the Gregorian calendar as some universal thing, when each society has had their own way of counting years.

  • I just like how it goes from trivial media preferences to "the earth will be a barren lifeless rock within eight thousand years".
  • My dreams exceed my real life
Well yeah, because they won't be the first generation to act on global warming, or the last generation to refuse to act.
  • My dreams exceed my real life

So you're saying the Splatoon vision of the apocalypse was right all along?

This seems like a fun apocalypse.

    Possibly.

I like how that's the one you pick out
  • Entitlement generation has a lot less titles than I care for.
  • I've learned to tolerate drama...except on the boat
Drew Magary noted the "Millennial Pledge" in his latest Dick Joke Jamboroo, so I was compelled to go read it and treat it like a checklist.

    • I am entitled to nothing.

I feel entitled to very little.

    • I will show up on time.

    I do.

    • I will not shun comedians or college commencement speakers just because I don't agree with them.

    I don't encounter any.

    • Just once, I will try driving without texting.

The thought of doing anything but focusing on the actual driving scares me!

    • Just once, I will try eating without texting.

    Already do.

    • I will not consider the cilantro on my taco to be a vegetable.

I don't get cilantro on my tacos.

    • I will learn to laugh at everything, especially myself.

I feel threatened easily and worry people hate me...

    • When meeting someone for the first time, I will always look him or her in the eye.

I have problems with that, and should improve there.

    • I will not burn bridges.

    I try not to.

    • I will not burn overpasses.

    ha ha

    • Each year, I will pen at least one thank-you note, using what's left of my cursive writing skills.

I keep forgetting about my calligraphy pens >_<

    • I will be resourceful, creative and authentic.

    I try.

    • I will vote. Always.

    I try.

    • I will (mostly) swear off smut.

I don't look at smut that often anyway.

    • I will not be smut.

    what does this mean?

    • I will learn all my siblings' names (even the younger ones).

I have not seen my half-sister in years, and know her name.

    • I will not spend an entire weekend exploring my own mouth with a coffee straw.

    I hate coffee.

    • I will learn to pick my battles.

    I have trouble with this.

    • When I don't get my way, I will learn to roll with it.

    I try..

    • I will not go on a job interview in shorts and flip-flops, even if "this job is so beneath me."

    I hate flip-flops.

    • Nothing is beneath me.

    I guess I think this.

    • I promise not to misuse the word "literally." As in "I am literally dying of hunger" or "You are literally being so rude."

    I don't misuse it!

    • If my first-born is a boy, I promise not to name him Uber.

I'm not having kids. And this is a classic out-of-touch sentiment.

    • When I finally move out of my parents' home, I will not take all their vodka and half their towels.

    Sure.

    • I will not use crowd-funding to pay for my first car.

That's a scary thought for more than one reason!

    • If I can't afford car insurance, I won't spend $20 a day on coffee.

    I hate coffee.

    • I won't give only gift cards for Christmas.

    Already don't.

    • I won't sneak texts during funerals even if it's "totally boring and the dead guy is just lying there anyway."

    Sure.

    • At holiday dinners, I will leave my phone in my room.

I don't go to family's places for holidays.

    • All those T-shirts? I will wash them.

    Sure.

    • I will not use pepper spray to season a burrito.

    I don't really eat burritos.

    • I will not run up my credit cards.

    Scared to.

    • I will save 10% of everything I earn.

    If I can.

    • If I hate my new job, I will not fake my own death. I will give a full two weeks' notice like grown-ups usually do.

    Sure.

    • I will force myself to finally make a phone call.

    ...what kind of phone call?

    • In high school or college, I will get a part-time job. Even if it's beneath me.

I want to, but I'm nervous.

    • Again, nothing is beneath me.

    alright alright

    • Well, most things are not beneath me.

    yeah

    • I promise not to text anything of life-changing significance: a marriage proposal, a divorce decree, a positive result.

What's wrong with texting? It's a form of communication! This reminds me of that "video games are bad" shit adults have been spouting all my life.

    • When I get my way, I will be grateful and not assume that I will always get my way.

    I'll try.

    • I will always remember Aristotle's quote: "It is the mark of an educated mind to be able to entertain a thought without accepting it."

What do you think I'm doing?

    • At least once a week, I will hug my mom the way I hug my friends every single time I see them.

I don't have any IRL friends, but I don't hug my mom enough.

    • I will do nice things just because.

    I'll try.

    • I will live each day.

    I do that already.

    • I will sleep each night.

Some days I don't get to sleep until after the sun rises, which I already feel upset about.

    • I am entitled to nothing but that.

    This "entitled" stuff is dumb!
  • THIS MACHINE KILLS FASCISTS
so, confirmed for more "you kids get off my lawn" crap, then?
  • I will not spend an entire weekend exploring my own mouth with a coffee straw.
    What does this even mean?
  • • I will not be smut.

    what does this mean?

don't take naughty pictures of yourself.

Which again is clearly something that no generation prior to this one has ever done.
  • imagei will watch the heck outta this pumpkin patch
    list is stupid

    picking my battles
  • Like is it a millennial thing to just take a coffee straw and poke it around your mouth for the better part of 48 hours? Or is it a euphemism for caffeine addiction, but if so, why specifically the weekend and why put it like that?

Also I feel like "all the vodka and half the towels" is incredibly specific, like it's what his kids did to him or what he did to his parents and he's projecting.

What even is a coffee straw? Who drinks hot drinks through a straw?
  • I think it's just "don't go to Starbucks"
  • What even is a coffee straw? Who drinks hot drinks through a straw?

it's a thing you use to stir creamer or sweetener or what have you into your coffee

Eye contact is unsettling, texting while driving is a thing that causes people to die, and showing up to a job interview  in flip flops is strange because wouldn't you show up wearing clothes AND flip flops?

I've learned to tolerate drama...except on the boat
Flip flops are awful things, at least to me

I hate the stupid thing between the big toe and the one next to it
  • image Wee yea erra chs hymmnos mea.
I will not put pepper spray and cilantro on my siblings.
  • The "millennial" pledge has a lot more to it.

Of course, it starts off with a lie, the person writing this is 58 years old.

Literally "Old man yelling at cloud"
