My Little Pony haters acting as though nerds had never before watched cartoons aimed at kids

I know this isn't 2011, but what the fuck is/was THAT about?

  • watching a cartoon aimed at kids is different from claiming the cartoon aimed at kids is not actually aimed at kids
  • did any significant number of people ever seriously claim that MLP wasn't aimed at kids?
  • I don't think so
  • I mean like, I was immersed in the damn fandom for years and I saw someone say something kinda like that once?
  • I've learned to tolerate drama...except on the boat
I heard about it via hearsay
  • and I got some hearsay in my spam folder that says that the FBI wants to give me 3 million dollars
  • First of all, It's 'aimed' at little girls, which is a threat against people's MASCULINITY ERMIEGARWD. HOW CAN I CONTAIN THIS MUCH MASTESTORANITY IF I"M WATCHMING TECHNICALOR PAWNIES.

  • Yeah I definitely have a problem w bronies because I think they're wimps.

    that is

    100% me
  • Sup bitches, witches, Haters, and trolls.
i don't have a problem with my little pony or adults of any gender enjoying my little pony or even my little pony porn though that's one of those things i don't really like being reminded exists

but actually calling yourself a brony is kinda a red flag to me
  • at this point the whole brony/pony/porn thing and the associated thoughts opinions and beliefs of people... aren't something that I think about really.
  • the whole thing is weird and convoluted and vaguely embarrasing

Yeah, I always thought that was a bit of a strawman argument

As though people conflated "this show is for kids, but an adult can appreciate it too" (which, imo, applies to a lot of cartoons) with "this show is really for adults"
  • imagei will watch the heck outta this pumpkin patch
Yeah, it was that, i think.

Like i think people were reading that as some kind of disingenuous thing?  Like if somebody said 'this show is for kids, but adults can also enjoy it', they'd read that as 'this show is for adults' but being dishonest about it?

Brony hate confuses me, not because it exists, but because so much of the hate comes from furries and social justice bloggers and neither of those makes any sense to me.

i do maintain that there were references in MLP that children cannot have been expected to get.  i mean, this is true of a lot of children's shows.

And i think early on they were intended for parents, but later there were definitely some bits that were aimed squarely at the online fandom ("careful Derpy" being an obvious case in point).  So i don't see how it's supposed to be stupid or dishonest or otherwise bad to suggest that the show was written partly with adults in mind.

This is basically what I've heard -- that the show was well-written in such a way that children and adults could both enjoy it, albeit even if in different ways.
