They did hold on at the Mines of Moria because they had ninjas. Every single orc there was a Dwarf in disguise. Even the Balrog was twenty one dwarves in a disguise. It was all a prank on the Fellowship by Balin, whose tomb was a fake.

Sadly, the Fellowship walked out a few minutes before everybody jumped out to yell "SURPRISE!".
