and there is this episode focusing on this african american woman named Ebony and the incidental music seems largely, ahem, "Urban Inspired"

discuss.

  • it was almost as deplorable as the way this woman dresses

TLC: the reason I don't want to buy Discovery Communications that bad

Also, I hate that "urban" = "black"

It refers to inner city ghettos
  • she's the head of the chicago branch of a non-profit and she wears her pyjamas outside
  • THIS MACHINE KILLS FASCISTS
TLC is an embarrassment. Even if Honey Boo-Boo isn't as bad as they say, most of their others shows are.

eh, the possible racism is still worth discussing, as are how disturbing child beauty pageants are.

    fair enough

serious question though, how is the use of 'urban' music indicative of racism?

lots of people like that kind of music without being from an actual ghetto
  • Because it's used entirely because the subject is black.

    how do you know that?

i mean, i'm assuming you didn't ask the person in charge of the soundtrack what effect they were going for

i haven't actually seen the episode, so it might have been really blatantly because she was black, but i'm having trouble envisioning how that could be the case
  • “I'm surprised. Those clothes… but, aren't you…?”
Child beauty pageants have always been disturbing, and they have been around for a pretty long time. One of Harlan Ellison's entries in his column The Glass Teat way back in 1970 was about how disturbing he found it to watch one of those things. And his issues are basically exactly the same as the ones that people bring up now, over forty years later.

I wonder if it's up online. Ellison has a pretty tight grip on what work of his does or doesn't end up on the Web, but it could be. Hmmm...

Also: Casual racism is the most annoying kind of racism, and probably the most dangerous in the long run.
  • "Urban" is a network euphemism.

also used peeps who make sample packs
