The implication of saying "I could care less" is an inherently sarcastic/ironic one—"I could care less... but I don't," being the subtext here, or, "As if I could care less," or even, "I could care only slightly less..."—but I can see why people prefer the clarity of "I couldn't care less."

Normally I would applaud the use of David Mitchell here, but I'm not sure whether or not the pedantry you're exhibiting is purely jocular or hiding some other motive.
