The New Flipside Worldbuilding Thread, because I can

So yeah, just another one for me to mess around with, like my superhero thread.

Anyways

THE CATALOG OF SPECIES

Dragons: Dragons are a group of reptiles, roughly divided into two categories. Flightless Dragons or Drakes, and Winged or True Dragons. Also covered here are Pseudodragons, which are not dragons, but often mistaken for them. A third type of true dragon, the Ancestral Dragon, once existed, but they are now extinct.

Drakes: A drake is a flightless dragon. All drakes possess a predatory cunning though not the true intelligence of their flying counterparts, and while Bearded Drakes have wings, none can fly.

Bearded Drakes/Red Drakes: Bearded Drakes are an apex jungle predator. Generally, they are red with black stripes (though green Bearded Drakes are not unknown, this is why the term "Red Drake" is no longer widely used), and have a "beard" of hairlike fibers that hangs off of their maw, they are quadrupedal with two stunted vestigial wings, and a segmented tail, they are approximately the size of tigers when fully grown. The purpose of this beard is not known (though there are several competing theories), it is known however that the beard continues to grow with age, and extremely old Bearded Drakes may have very long beard indeed. Contrary to popular myth, a Bearded Drake's beard appears on both sexes of the species. Bearded Drakes are largely solitary, and are quite territorial. The only contact a Bearded Drake will generally ever have with another, is when it is young and being raised by its mother, fighting off rivals, and mating. Bearded Drakes mate only once in their entire lives, and females rarely have more than one offspring.  Defensively, Bearded Drakes do not have a breath weapon as such, but their bites are often toxic due to the high amount of bacteria in them. They are also more than willing to use their large claws.

Maned Drakes/Green Drakes: Maned Drakes are pack predators that roam open plains. They are small, roughly the size of a large dog, they have no wings and a stiff tail. They have a mane of hairlike fibers up and down their necks, but this does not grow to nearly the size of a Bearded Drake's beard. Generally, they are green with darker green stripes. The largest individual leads a pack (usually 10-15 individuals, some of whom are likely infants or elderly) and has exclusive mating rights. Maned Drakes have been domesticated by some plains communities, this variety, known as a Horse Drake, are quite difficult to control, but make excellent guard and work animals (being quite strong for their small size).

Dragons: Dragons are quadrupeds with an independent set of wings (that is, not connected to their arms, see Pseudodragons below), they are quite intelligent, and speak an assortment of languages mostly consisting of guttural growls and high pitched screeches. Dragons can speak the languages of the bipedal races, but only with some difficulty, and they are often hard to understand.

Mountain Dragons: The traditional "Red Dragon" archetype (though they can be brown, tan, yellow, orange, or even white as well). They are quite intelligent and capable of breathing fire. They're also the largest true dragons, being larger than even elephants. Some Mountain Dragons also have a beard as Beard Drakes do, but this is a genetic trait, and is fairly rare.

Arctic Dragons: The smallest true dragons, Arctic Dragons are generally white and lack a breath weapon. They are also the most solitary of all true dragons, as such, little is really known about them.

Cave Dragons/Gem Dragons: Often thought to be two species, Cave and Gem Dragons are in fact the male and female respectively of one. Cave Dragons are smaller, usually brownish in coloration, lack a breath weapon and rarely leave their caveside lairs. Gem Dragons are larger, and can be nearly any color with extremely shiny, highly-reflective scales, Gem Dragons can spit a concentrated beam of burning light from a special organ in the back of their throats. One Gem Dragon often has several Cave Dragon mates, who collectively raise her young. Cave/Gem Dragons are among the most intelligent Dragons, and one Gem Dragon--the Baroness Gruuu'z G'khaaie--even became the ruler of a relatively prosperous city.

Sand Dragons: Desert dwellers by nature, Sand Dragons spend quite a lot of time on the ground. They are usually yellowish tan in color to blend in with the desert sands, and frequently can be found spending hours stalking small prey. Sand Dragons are often incorrectly typified as lazy, in actuality they are simply far more active at night than during the day. Sand Dragons do not have a breath weapon as such, but are capable of blowing massive quantities of sand at any would-be attackers. Sand Dragons are also far more serpentine than many dragons and have long, slender bodies.

Comments

  • Pseudodragons: Pseudodragons are creatures that are oft-mistaken for dragons, but are in fact, not dragons. What they actually are depends on the individual species.

Wyrms/Wurms/The Dragonesque: Wurms are perhaps the least dragon-like pseudodragons. They are in fact, a class all their own. These are the last descendants of a group of reptile-like mammals. Wurms are enormous, making even Mountain Dragons look small by comparison. Wurms also lack independent wings, their wings instead being built onto their arms, much like bats. A Wurm's head has a single, long, rhinoceros-like horn protruding out of it. Wurms are generally very dark in coloration, nearing if not actually completely black. Their "scales" are in fact, small plates of chitin (the same substance fingernails are made out of), and as such, are not as hard as real dragonscale. They can also breathe fire, which only furthers their confusion with true dragons.

Sea Dragons: Sea Dragons are in fact an unrelated class of aquatic reptile that come in a variety of shapes and sizes.

Primal Dragons: Primal Dragons are in fact the last remaining dinosaurs of the carnosauria order, rather than actual dragons. They most closely resemble Gigantosaurus, though they are significantly smaller.

  • Man is a most complex simple creature: see what he weaves, and how base his reasons for doing so.
I had a thing where there were four directions with four elements dominated by four greater nations with four species of dragons (e.g; Basilisks were completely sightless and where their eyes would have been was really a sort of bio-cannon that sprayed quick-drying cement).
  • ⊗¯\_(ツ)_/¯⊗
This seemed plausible until you got to the light cannon thing :<

Oh, and Bearded Drakes... If a pair has one child only, then wouldn't they go extinct? Might want to correct that to 3 (to account for deaths before having children)
  • This seemed plausible until you got to the light cannon thing :<

Plausibility isn't really the goal here. The Flipside works on a pretty different set of natural laws than we do.

Though I'm not entirely sure how that'd work myself. I assume magic (that's not a joke).

I don't know, maybe. I'll get back to it next time I do biology.

I have a fantasy map drawn up, and it is horrendous. I am going to post it anyway. Students of cartography steer clear.

Maybe it's a laser, generated from its naturally-high biological electricity generation, being focused through two growths of differing reflective properties made from complex fats.
  • Behold my eye-searing creation. Which I will not even embed here.

My visual art skills are lacking. Astute lookers may notice that it is Pangea. There is a reason for that (sorta) and I will elaborate on it another time.

Anyhow, a quick run-down of what is what.

    As a note:

Anything cross-hatched with two or more colors is claimed by those two nations

"Claims" are here defined as territory a nation believes itself to be the owner of, but lacks the physical power to enforce any laws in those territories. How much control a nation has over its claims fluctuates frequently, but most often, Claimed territories are in practice, series of city-states and rural, unaffiliated communities.

    Nations!

    The Primate of Dorado:

    • Capital: Dorado
    • Governmental System: Semi-Democratic
    • National Language: Dergiz (aka Doradan)
    • Ruler: Noeli Roniteth, Prima, First Defender, Representative of the Will of the People, etc.
    • Dorado in practice is a city-state. And one that has existed in its current location for many years (it predates even the Old Kendar Empire, see below). Dorado is ruled by a Prime or Prima, selected by a town council, the council themselves being democratically elected from amongst the populace. What this means in practice has fluctuated over the years, but Dorado recently broke a long string of oligarchy in its government with the genuinely democratic election of Prima Noeli Roniteth. Dorado lays claim to a fairly large area outside of its city walls (mostly territories disputed with the rival Korokopoul). Dorado is one of the most ethnically diverse places on the Flipside. Witches are the majority, but large communities of Humans (from Korokopoul), Oni and Spirits (from the Tribal Lands to the north), and even Kobolds and Dwarves (from the Desert) make their homes here as well. Dorado's primary strength is economic and technologic. Despite their military's smaller numbers than the surrounding nations, Dorado keeps itself safe with a combination of technological innovation (the so called Magecannons) and economic pressure.

    The Kingdom of Korokopoul

    • Capital: Ktecganos
    • Governmental System: Monarchy, with Some Democratic Representation
    • National Languages: Kerekepelezh & Korokopoule
    • Ruler: King Tganeconcz II Keletelemenecz, His Royal Majesty, The Gods' Right Hand
    • Korokopoul is an oddity. One of dozens of small kingdoms that sprang up after the collapse of the Old Kendar Empire, Korokopoul is the only one still standing. This is in part due to the military brilliance of its founder, Eghemegoncz I, and in part due to his descendants ability to keep the kingdom together. This is not an easy task, despite being composed almost entirely of humans and "low" (southern) dwarves (Oni and Spirits compose a small minority), Korokopoul is incredibly diverse. The national language, Kerekepelezh (a human tongue heavily influenced by Dwarven languages), is spoken only by a small percentage of the populace living on the coast and the royal family, and no less than twenty four other languages are spoken within Korokopoul's borders (these include Dergiz, Gahari, Khl'z, and Muersheu, to name only a few). This led to the creation of a second, artificial national language, Korokopoule, but it is only now, several generations after the kingdom's founding that it has finally begun to catch on.
    • Korokopoul has been at odds with its northern neighbor of Dorado almost since its inception, with the two often being at odds over land claims (such squabbles continue to this day), but relations are finally beginning to thaw with both the ascension of a new king to the Korokopoule throne, and the election of a new Prima in Dorado.

    to be continued....

  • The Lersoet Desert is largely uninhabited, aside from the numerous tribes in the area, the following are exceptions to this rule:

The Lands of the Dragon Baroness (Informally: Gruzia or G'ruuuzmayYn)

    • Capital: G'ruuuz-ReehKh
    • Governmental System: Despotism
    • National Languages: H'heeefHh (Cave Dragon), Khmu'Khme'Khfr (Fire Oni)
    • Ruler: The Baroness G'ruuuz G'khaaie, Dragon Protector of the Desert
    • Gruzia is, simply put, the lands that have been claimed by the Gem Dragon G'ruuuz G'khaaie for the better part of four centuries. It consists mostly of its capital, G'ruuuz-ReehKh, and a few surrounding villages. Though the Dragon Baroness claims lands much farther than that, and indeed her claims are rarely contested. Despite what one may think of the very concept of a Dragon as a ruler, G'ruuuz is generally considered by her subjects to be a fair--if sometimes strict--leader. The Cave Dragon dialect of H'heefHh is the national language for formal purposes, but the most widely spoken is a dialect of Fire Oni, this makes sense, as Fire Oni are by far the majority within G'ruuuz's lands, though there are minorities of humans, dwarves, and a wide variety of lizardfolk as well. G'ruuuz is nearing her twilight years, and her son SHree'ee G'khaaie Hauhh is being groomed as a successor. It should be noted that despite often being called G'ruuuzmayYn ("Gruuz's Lands" in H'heefHh) or the much less formal "Gruzia", the nation still lacks an official name, as dragons generally reserve names for living creatures, rather than inanimate objects or abstractions.

    The Free City of Andar

    • Capital: Andar
    • Governmental System: Informal Oligarchy
    • National Languages: n/a
    • Ruler: Murai Hanset, San of Andar
    • Andar is a settlement of outcasts. Populated by Oni of all elements, lizardfolk, dwarves, disenfranchised humans, and most notably, the cast-off remenants of the Old Kendar war machine. The Constructs. Living, self-aware Golems who now search en masse for their place in this world.
    • Andar manages to prosper largely due to its location near an Oasis.
    • note: Much of his is retcon.

  • Man is a most complex simple creature: see what he weaves, and how base his reasons for doing so.
You read Limyaael's stuff? She points out a lot of fantasy fallacies, dumb things, and places a lot of importance in thinking real hard about what you're doing.
  • The Remains of The Kendar Empire

The Kendar Empire was at one point the dominant force of the Flipside, encompassing almost all of its landmass, including what is now The "New" Kendar Empire, South Free Kendar, Lower Kundar, and much of the currently-unclaimed Western Jungle, as well as parts of Rheingamungzst. As empires of such massive size are wont to do, Kendar collapsed under its own weight after barely a half-century at its peak. Emperor Kondarus is still a widely-revered figure today for managing to even hold it together that long. After its fall, Kendari was split between what remained of the north (which kept the name of the Kendar Empire) and what was left of the south (which became known as Kundar) with different descendants of Kondarus claiming the throne at different times.

    "The Kendar Empire" (New Kendar)

    • Capital: Kendarostenta
    • Governmental System: Formally a Monarchy, in practice, more like an odd feudal twist on a republic. Local and provincial rulers generally hold more power than the emperor.
    • National Language: Kendari
    • Ruler: Cenzavegh IV Kendarspan, His Imperial Majesty, Heir to Kondarus
    • If the entity currently known as the Kendar Empire can be seen as anything, it is as a lesson that even the mightiest can fall, and fall far. While the current land it does control is not small by any means, provincial fuedal rulers hold far more power than the sickly Emperor Cenzavegh, and it has been in this same pattern for the past three generations. The peasants of the land are generally happy, but are far more willing to pledge their allegiance to say--Lord Oszmarion--than their Emperor for any reason beyond lip service. The lands that New Kendar claims are in even a sadder state, with the self-proclaimed King Sakhaddeus ruling much of the northern territories, and the aforementioned Lord Oszmarion ruling most of the west. New Kendar has been on the brink of collapse for generations, and the final turning point is very, very near. Perhaps the most dire sign of the aging Empire's illness is the existence of South Free Kendar.

South Free Kendar ("The Duchy of Piyelax") & Allied Territories

    • Capital: Base of Operations in Iex
    • Governmental System: Rebellion
    • National Language: n/a
    • Ruler: Lord Soleko per-Iex, Duke of Iex
    • South Free Kendar (its technical designation, it goes by many names) is less a nation and more a nation in the making. Breaking off from the failing New Kendar to establish an independant nation in the homeland of the Piyelax Humans, South Free Kendar is currently recognized by only two other nations (Dorado and Korokopoul, both of whom have a vested interest in seeing Kendar fall, but are reluctant to openly confront them). Currently it is attempting to consolidate its powerbase in southern New Kendar, a task that is going quite well given the status of the empire's military in that area. Talks have begun to have South Free Kendar recognized as the independent Duchy of Piyelax, but it is possible more fighting will be necessary to truly liberate the area.

    Lower Kundar

    • Capital: Leukn
    • Governmental System: Constitutional Monarchy
    • National Languages: Kendari, Knaz
    • Ruler: Emperor Sientaz III Kenderspenkt, His Imperial Majesty
    • If New Kendar is denialism, than Lower Kundar is a resigned acceptance. Despite still-made formal claims over a wide swath of land they have absolutely no control over, Kundar has opted to focus inward. Outside of the capitol of Leukn and several nearby cities, few places remain in Lower Kundar that are truly under the Emperor's control. So, he has concentrated on keeping what he has. Kundar is populated mostly by the Knaz, a former minority (much like Piyelax) in Old Kendar.

You've got a good grasp of world politics and government.

Now show me what you're doing with magic.
  • I'm still aiming to finish the nations' profiles first.
