It's actually not a plot-point, just a hand-wave on why this guy came to deliver the "BRO GET OVER HERE WE FOUND COOL MYSTERIOUS STUFF" message by himself instead of either (1) returning with the rest of the expedition or (2) making contact over the radio (either of these would have messed up the conversation-tree tutorial).
