Mike Shinoda is Asian
not that I'd expect the people making such posts to know that, or care
I would like to say "because Mike Shinoda has a storied career outside of Linkin Park and has worked with (among other people) Lupe Fiasco and Ghostface Killah" but no less a godfather than E fucking 40 loves Macklemore and that's not stopped anyone, so.
I mean, Iggy Azalea was backed by a famous black rapper too, as I vaguely recall, but that didn't make her, you know, not terrible.
yeah but A) Iggy Azalea fucking sucks even if she weren't an appropriating dickweed and B) even T.I., her own former label boss, has been sick of her shit for years. Also Iggy is Australian. Both Macklemore and Shinoda are American.
Macklemore had a very long career before "Thrift Shop" happened. He was a cornerstone figure in the Seattle Underground for years. Other MCs liking him is a sort of "Busta Rhymes is a huge MURS fan" situation, the difference in notoriety didn't prevent him from being liked by other rappers even if he sometimes did silly things like say rapping over "Axel F".
Shinoda's more or less in the same camp though his underground career came after his presence in the pop world. Dude had a beat on Lice, it's just not the sort of thing you do if you're only making music to make a buck or get famous.
I just have always thought that the Macklemore hate circlejerk was super weird. Dude's kind of corny and maybe overly-earnest (which isn't really even a character flaw per se) but he's not a bad person.
Macklemore is one of those artists who it's very easy to forget has been around forever. I mean, "White Privilege II" is the sequel to a song from his only proper LP, which dropped in 2005, which was five years after his first EP.
Question: What is the hot take on Murs because I have heard one (1) song of his
Tumblr doesn't care about MURS because in addition to making music he has a quote unquote real job at a hardware store and is also an actual political activist and is therefore hard to dig up dirt on. Also he's not really famous.
Aesop isn't even obscure. He's not Jay-Z famous, but if you actually listen to music that isn't on the Top 40 and aren't some weird one-genre anorak you've probably heard of him.
