A question

A while back, a coworker had this conversation with me:

Coworker: I read one of the new Star Wars books. Apparently Star Wars has gay people now, like everything else.

Me: What's the problem with that?

Coworker: The problem is that they're in everything, and in all the shows and books. It's all made for young people and liberals, there's nothing out there that's for me.

Me: let's get back to work.

So, heapers, what would a better response have been, so far as advocating for representation without jeopardizing my job at a church-owned store or the mood of my coworker, who I am required to spend around 28 hours a week with and would prefer to keep in a good mood?

  • My dreams exceed my real life
"Well there's hundreds of years of stuff that's made for you"
  • "Do you stare at them constantly thinking 'oh my gosh they're gay the world's about to end'?  Why does it even matter to you at all?  Are you allergic to gay people?"
    "If so, why?"

Touch the cow. Do it now.
How does having maybe one or two gay characters make something not "for me"? Presumably the majority of the characters are still non-gay, for one thing.
  • There are gay people in real life, and real life is still for you
