"apps"

No, you idiots, the word is, "applications", and the singular is, "application".

Do you want me to pronounce only the first syllable of YOUR words or name?

well... that is traditionally how some names are abbreviated...
  • Honestly "application" was always kind of a dumb word for this, and non-computer people rarely ever used it, preferring the vague "program". (Computer people, on the other hand, frequently used "app" long before that word exploded in popularity.) So there's not much reason to try and preserve it imo.

Nonono, you see, Alice is abbreviated as Ice. Jonathan is abbreviated as Fan.

I can kinda understand getting annoyed at this tbh

Because I've seen this bizarre misunderstanding that "apps" are a new thing

Like when Windows 8 came out, I saw people who were like "I don't want 'apps' on my PC, I want normal programs!!"

...the first syllable is the only syllable, so yes. Yes, I do.

I would be ok with people calling me Al while I transition, though once I'm full-time girl I'd like to be Alice

Far as I can tell that's just non-techy people continuing to be that though. Sounds like a bit of conflation really.

And then somehow Richard became Dick and José became Pepe.

As for "apps", I often still call them "programs".  Though some friends I know call them "progs".

(Incidentally, I might describe them as "computer whizzes", or rather, "computer wizards".)

I am often called Vid or Mags.

To me, what's confusing is when restaurants advertise "half price apps".

Maybe they're the only one who does it. I don't pay that close attention to whose advertisements they are.
