    The exact point at which we decide to mark the new one is arbitary, but a "year" is a measure of the time it takes for the earth to do one full rotation around the sun, rounded down except for leapyears when we round up.

    me, i'm still weirded out that by 2042 the year is going to be two whole seconds longer than it was in 1970 or whenever it was we standardized the length
