    Pansy is actually a false attribution.  It's a variant of a French loanword meaning "to think" and has nothing to do with the flower (which was named using the same French word but centuries later and under completely different context) -- though it is sexist, homophobic, and anti-intellectual because it's not a good insult until it offends at least three groups.
