I'm referring to high-quality American cartoon series that focus on story arcs and worldbuilding

Well yeah, you've always been less involved in the anime fandom, so you hearing only big and popular names makes sense.

Still a lot of bad and mediocre shows though.

    what is prestige

It's high quality. Critical acclaim. Influence. Things that feel like they're much better than other things.

Anyway, give me the names and summaries of some bad/mediocre anime, I might need to watch them to fill my Anime Meter further
  • Touch the cow. Do it now.
"Prestige" is meaningless, and the best anime is Teekyu.
  • kill living beings
cowboy bebop - a bunch of losers do odd jobs in the space future after a generic apocalypse destoyred earth

durarara - high schoolers in generic tokyo high school setting have latent powers which they end up using to fight crime

ghost in the shell - something about police, but it's basically 80% ass shots

.hack - guy gets trapped in an MMO and meets chicks there

    (bake)monogatari - harem
  • the best anime is Teekyu.

    this is just true

    don't do that.

    "Prestige" is meaningless

SAO, The Asterisk War, Bleach, Death Note is entertaining but ridiculous...

Or better yet, why don't you look at Hulu, or Wikipedia, or Crunchyroll, or Funimation, or Netflix (if you have it), and look at what's there. Then, you know, decide for yourself and make decisions for yourself. Why do you keep doing this for bad/good/etc. media.

I have to wonder if there's a filter on mediocre-to-bad anime getting exported, like there was on certain games that were either bad or too closely tied to Japanese culture back in the 1980s and 1990s.

Prestige is mostly BS, but it's not "meaningless", and i get what AU means here

i would say these shows focus more on characters than plot or worldbuilding, though, they just happen to pay more attention to both those things than is typical in the format

i would suggest Over the Garden Wall as a possible example.  Maybe also Venture Bros., although i haven't seen it.
  • We can do anything if we do it together.
Using AU's definition, Rick & Morty is kinda half one (and half "adult cartoon").
  • imagei will watch the heck outta this pumpkin patch
Venture Bros. probably falls into that category, from what i know of it
