deep ruminations

And in the naked light I saw
Ten thousand people, maybe more.
People talking without speaking,
People hearing without listening,
People writing songs that voices never share
And no one dared
Disturb the sound of silence.
"Fools," said I, "You do not know.
Silence like a cancer grows.
Hear my words that I might teach you.
Take my arms that I might reach you."
But my words like silent raindrops fell
And echoed in the wells of silence

  • this line reminded me of American Psycho.

A major theme in American Psycho is shallowness and vapidity. Patrick Bateman and all of his friends have surface-level, facile interactions that communicate no greater meaning with each other all the time. While this isn't bad in and of itself, it seems like their lives are defined by such non-communications and they are incapable of communicating any other way. This lack of communication becomes so great that they aren't even able to distinguish between one another, so everything becomes blurred. The message is quite clear: the wealthy and powerful are shallow assholes.
