"Outrospections" - a thread for contemplations and musings that you don't expect a reply to

edited 2016-03-21 22:38:05 in General
This thread is for when you just want to speaking something to the wind, mutter something into the darkness, shout something to the world, or something like that.  Just to express yourself, and not necessarily waiting for or expecting anyone to reply.

It's okay if what you say here does not have context.

In case anyone asks, the difference between this thread and the landfill or other wonderposting threads is that this is meant for meaningful expression of thought, even if not meant for conversation/reply, while whatever is in the landfill carries no expectation of meaningfulness.

  • Dear professor,
Minor suggestion: you can have your students watch a movie that introduces a bunch of earth science concepts, on the first day of lab, when there is little else for them to do, but they have a lot of free time.
  • I wonder what happens when I attempt to use a cell phone's barcode scanning app to scan the pattern of geomagnetic reversals.

    *tries it*

    *nothing interesting happens*

Aww, I was hoping to discover something like God's Social Security Number.
  • Touch the cow. Do it now.
I never expected geometry to be useful
  • I suddenly am interested in seeing depictions of the Earth's core in videogames.
  • Splat Charger Specialist
Whiling is a good title for something
  • I am skeptical of Netflix.

i kinda want to live in a world where the top 40s are mostly jazz

perhaps rock and roll was a mistake
  • Rock Was A Mistake is my new punk record label
  • Touch the cow. Do it now.
never in my life have I thought rock and roll was a mistake

my mind cannot contemplate the thought
  • the top 40s should sound like

  • Touch the cow. Do it now.
    or else

  • As someone whose personality almost renders such behavior impossible, I find hedonistic characters to be fascinating in a strange way.

I would say it's a vicarious thing, but I don't have any desire to put myself into the shoes of, for example, an alcoholic acorn, so it's more like an enthrallment with the thought processes of said acorn (who, rightfully, has earned a spot as my avatar for now as a result).
  • I've learned to tolerate drama...except on the boat
how does your personality render such behavior impossible? work ethic?
  • well, hedonism in the "smoking/drinking/drugs/etc." sense

I'm capable of doing things to seek pleasure but I don't do so with anything consumed besides plain ol' food and soft drinks
  • I've learned to tolerate drama...except on the boat
    oh

if you want my idea of hedonism just think of Amethyst

i kinda expected to hate the Shapednoise track but honestly i really enjoyed it

i guess to revise my earlier thought: there is a part of me that really doesn't understand why there isn't more jazz in the popular charts.  noise music and tech death, i get why those aren't everyone's cup of tea.  jazz seems like it should be one of those genres that always has at least some presence in the charts
  • “I'm surprised. Those clothes… but, aren't you…?”
Technically, hedonism is the philosophy that being happy is what is important. Utilitarianism, Epicureanism and the like are all forms of ethical hedonism or adjacent to it.

As for why jazz isn't so mainstream: It tends not to have words and isn't easy to dance to in a modern context.

    swing though
  • For once, or maybe twice, I was in my prime.
There was a time when I blamed bebop—and everyone who played it—for scaring the general public away from jazz, thereby "ruining" pop music.

What I didn't get then was that the swing scene had been overrun by hacky bandwagon-jumpers. So it was correlation, not causation: the serious jazz musicians and the listening public both independently got tired of swing and abandoned it.
  • “I'm surprised. Those clothes… but, aren't you…?”
I'm sure there's someone out there who could turn swing into a living organism again, but as it stands most new swing stuff thrives on a nostalgic aesthetic.

Incidentally, modern jazz is seeing something of a popular resurgence, but mainly in the indie scene.
  • Anthony Braxton
  • “I'm surprised. Those clothes… but, aren't you…?”
Braxton's interesting in that he sees himself more as an experimental classical composer who writes for brass and woodwinds than a jazz musician, but he really thrives in any weird, formidable musical environment.

I vastly prefer instrumental music myself, so
  • I can only think of two somewhat popular jazz bands, Snarky Puppy and OddFuture affiliates BADBADNOTGOOD.

I'm not looking for something "good" to watch.

I'm looking for something I'm in the mood to watch.

You can have a story with the best writing, best directing, best animation, best fight scenes, best voice talent, and yet it can be in a genre or story type that I'm not interested in, and, no, I'm not interested in watching it.

I watch things for personal fulfillment.

I am not a student of the medium.  I do not seek "the best".  I do not care to be a "critic" with "fine taste" (though if you want to say that I have "shit taste", I will certainly not have much respect for your comments).

I don't even seek to watch stuff merely to be able to talk to people about them.  I don't really care if something's popular; if it appeals to me then I'll look into it, but if it doesn't, I don't much care about it.
