    3D Zelda is fine

2D Zelda is better, but that's only because 2D everything is better

    2D Zelda is better

tbh that's my actual opinion too

    What about flat boobs?
  • Touch the cow. Do it now.
large boobs can be portrayed effectively in 2D art; see my avatar for an example.
  • I wanted to say that the boobs aren't even visible in your avatar and then I checked your user profile.

Why didn't I realize you could customize the cropping on your avatar? I uploaded several increasingly zoomed in versions of Ema until I got one that looked good at post size because I didn't know lol.

you can only do squares, though. sucks

I think Imi always does that -- a big picture with boobs and an avatar with the boobs cropped out.

Anyway, wanna hear some SNES kid perspective on history?  Here, have some.

    1. There have been two generations of consoles since the SNES: crappy 3D (PS1/SS/N64), and good-looking 3D (GC/PS2/SD and onward).

1'. Metroid Prime is a recent game.

    2. Gaming is either primarily 2D/2.5D, or about an even mix of 2D/2.5D and full 3D.  Okay, fine, 2D/2.5D/2.75D.  (FYI 2.5D means 2D interface with 3D graphics, and 2.75D means limited 3D perspective, such as fixed camera relative to character.)

    3. FPS games are games that "those people" play.  Open world survival?  What's that?

    4. The JRPG, the platformer, and the Zelda-like (i.e. top-down action) are the most important genres.
  • We can do anything if we do it together.

actually FFTA is the best final fantasy

correct, so that boobphobic individuals don't necessarily have to look at 'em

Anyway, the Metroidvania is the supreme game genre.

    3D Zeldas were better imo

lovely environments to explore, it felt like being on a real adventure

and i didn't get stuck all the time, which i did in the 2D games for some reason
  • I've heard lots and lots of good things about Ocarina, and I've personally seen enough of Twilight Princess to conclude that it looks quite interesting.

Aside from that I dunno what 3D Zeldas are good.
  • imagei will watch the heck outta this pumpkin patch
All the 3D Zeldas are good, although Skyward Sword got a more mixed reception iirc

(Hyrule Warriors, while imo enjoyable, does not count)
  • I played Wind Waker for the first time a year and a half ago and it was very cute, and good.

I still really want to play Skyward Sword since I love its look, but that would require getting a WiiMote Plus and, ehh. (Also Hyrule Warriors has already colored my opinion of fighting The Imprisoned. What a pissant.)
  • imagei will watch the heck outta this pumpkin patch
The Imprisoned is, i maintain, the kind of monster that doesn't work so well outside the context of the story it was written for, much like the Weeping Angels from Doctor Who

also Skyward Sword looks gorgeous, yes

Ocarina of Time was an experience I'll never be able to repeat.

Yeah I dunno who said 3D Zelda sucks.  They've pretty much all been quite decent to excellent, and LTTP is the only one that's gotten anywhere near the kind of reception as OOT and Majora.

Here's the reception I've heard about each Zelda game, according to "the fandom" as a whole:

    Zelda 1 - pretty good
    Zelda 2 - sucks
Link to the Past - awesome
    Link's Awakening - awesome
Oracle of Ages/Seasons - okay or pretty good
    Minish Cap - probably decent
Link Between Worlds - probably awesome
    Ocarina of Time - awesome
    Majora's Mask - probably okay
Wind Waker - ehh, probably okay
    Twilight Princess - pretty good
Spirit Tracks - no one talks about this for some reason
Skyward Sword - apparently pretty awesome?
Hyrule Warriors - apparently pretty decent
    Faces of Evil - horrible
    Wand of Gamelon - horrible
Zelda's Adventure - somewhat less horrible

These may or may not be inaccurate.

Spirit Tracks was weird but okay.  The traversal was novel but ended up being kinda boring, and prone to fucking you over with instadeath.  Also the final boss was a rhythm game for some reason.  I liked Phantom Hourglass better.
  • My assessment: every Zelda game is good but 2D stans get tiring
  • 2D stans aka people who prefer flat eminem
  • We can do anything if we do it together.
I need to dig more into Zelda, but as far as I know so far, 2D > 3D. Sorry Kex.

    so people who like Relapse

Grossly misleading, as this suggests that the Oracle games (which are not *bad* but are heavy on the backtracking and probably among the weaker games in the series) are better than Majora's Mask (a strong contender for best Zelda, period)

i would contend that Zelda II doesn't "suck", but it does have some pretty bad design; mostly it's just hard, though, much harder than the other games in the series
  • imagei will watch the heck outta this pumpkin patch
Also you left out Four Swords Adventures, which is pretty great

  • imagei will watch the heck outta this pumpkin patch
oh hey you also missed Phantom Hourglass, that's rather an oversight

i tend not to think about that one or Spirit Tracks very much though

I have really mixed feelings on Twilight Princess because on one hand the story's amazing, Midna's my bae, and the dungeons were really fun.

But on the other hand, the first few dungeons were average at best, and the sidequests necessary to access them were the pits, in fact the fact that the game felt it necessary to make me run errands every time I wanted to get to the next dungeon! I love sidequests, but making me do them just feels like homework.

Not to mention making Hyrule so huge and yet there only being five places there's actually stuff to do in. If I wandered off in a random direction in Twilight, I'd just find some enemies. If I wander off in a random direction in Wind Waker, I'd find a mini dungeon and treasure.

I love 3D zelda games, but Twilight Princess isn't the best one by long shot. now Wind Waker? (Especially HD) That's my jam.

To be honest I didn't know "2D stans" were a thing. I guess I don't get into Zelda discussions much but on the occasions I have I've pretty much never seen anyone agree with my preference for 2D until this thread.
  • Man is a most complex simple creature: see what he weaves, and how base his reasons for doing so.
I'll stan for arcades but not for any actual consoles.
  • They are *very much* a thing.

IMHO the original is very good and has aged beautifully, AoL is better than it's given credit for and immensely more playable than most other early attempts at genre blending, ALttP plays well but feels very thin and its big moments lose almost all of their emotional impact the second time through, LA is a good game elevated to greatness by its twist and its heart-wrenching ending, the Oracle games were good by dint of ambition but suffered massively from a lack of polish, MC is loads of fun and has a basic gameplay loop that I wish was emulated/refined in later entries, the two DS games were perfectly fine action-adventures that are really tough to rank in the series, and ALBW refined everything about ALttP while suffering just as much from its problems and also gaining a problem in the form of an ill-advised last minute twist that almost completely undermines any feeling of heroicism that had been established beforehand.

Will elaborate on any individual game if any of yall want me to.
  • The Four Swords games were, uh, fun.
  • imagei will watch the heck outta this pumpkin patch
i legit feel that Four Swords Adventures with 3 or 4 people was an amazing multiplayer experience, the perfect balance of competitive and cooperative play.

Twilight Princess may be my favourite Zelda, although i by no means dislike the Wind Waker
  • Was just talking to my buds about how I've never really played most of Nintendo's big franchises (Zelda included) and lowkey felt like I missed out on one of those things that everyone holds nostalgia for as a result

I am interested in trying it, but I don't have any of their consoles lying around so it might be a while unless I resort to other means.
  • THIS MACHINE KILLS FASCISTS
WHen I was little, we didn't have the first Zelda, but we had Zelda II and God damn that mountain was hard.

I still wonder how many thrown controllers and/or Game Genie sales that one stage was worth.
  • Touch the cow. Do it now.
Zelda II is mostly okay, it just gets needlessly punishing at times.

ALTTP is one of the best games ever, regardless of what kex sez.
  • Majora's Mask I'd easily place as one of my favorite Zelda games. My god I love it.
  • I've learned to tolerate drama...except on the boat
I could never get over how the entire game is on a time limit, honestly

The time limit is never really imposing unless you're just really bad, and it's always reversible.  Honestly you'll spend more time waiting for an event than hurrying to meet one.
