I'd imagine that the French like Rayman enough to keep him around for 20 years, but he's nowhere near the level of cash cow his, ahem, lapine adversaries have become.

If anything, I feel like this is a better description of maybe Bubsy if one were to get rid of the European qualifier. (Perhaps Ristar as well, though I haven't played that and I feel like it's a bit more special than this implies. Plan to at some point though!)

Other potential candidates: Gex (both a parody and an example), Awesome Possum, Jazz Jackrabbit, and maybe de Blob as a 21st century example.

Can't remember if any of them are European (I know Jazz isn't, being part of the Epic catalog and all) but eh. Gotta say, Bubsy and AP are probably the closest analogues.
