Why do people like celebrity gossip?

    Perhaps it's just something to talk about.  Something to follow.  Something to care about outside one's own life.

    People seem to crave that.

    Celebrities represent an idealized life that others aspire to.

    People like to know that even famous, seemingly untouchable people have problems, and using that as a focus helps them take their minds off their own problems and frustrations.

    I'm not saying that it can't lead there, because it often does, but it's popular for less nefarious reasons.
