Sushi really is the best food. Japan has also raised food on a stick to high art rarely seen outside Minnesota, which could be a Japanese word because look at those vowels and consonants, my god.

Anyway.

I think my original interest in the Japanese language was kindled not by anime, which I got into late in high school—at least, in terms of fully grasping what anime actually was—but in wanting to pronounce the names of different sorts of Japanese foods correctly: Unagi, botan ebi, toromaki.
