School loyalty aside, Michigan doesn't actually strike me as much worse than Ohio.
They have Detroit, but we have Cleveland, so that pretty much evens out the score.

I always found it striking how Mother gets choked up anytime she is reminded of Detroit's sadness (though she's not from there and refuses to go there beyond the airport), meanwhile the outside world doesn't feel sorry for Detroit, which I tend to assume is for racist reasons.
Also, Ohio doesn't have shitawful roads, at least in my experience.
