  • You are the end result of a “would you push the button” prompt where the prompt was “you have unlimited godlike powers but you appear to all and sundry to be an impetuous child” – Zero, 2022
Someone was like "what if we let people put names on Coke bottles?"

I hope that person got a nice bonus...

Nobody seems to have noticed that Coke had a typeface based on the "Coke" wordmark whipped up for this

Or maybe it existed well before this

of course most people seem to be dummies who think every letter is part of a font

the ABC logo was designed when Paul Rand sat down in front of his Windows machine and pulled up the ABC logo font and typed "abc" and put it in a circle
  • ha, so stupid amirite
  • kill living beings
I am part of a font.
  • THIS MACHINE KILLS FASCISTS
And one of the brilliant thing about the ABC logo is that you can draw it with just a compass and a ruler. You don't need a protractor or spirograph wheels or anything special.

I just assumed it was an existing typeface that happened to look similar, but maybe you're right

  • Good post indeed.  Gender is NOT just a tag.

  • what is that actually about.

I don't recognize any of those names and this is pretty clearly a thing where the person is trying to seem they're speaking generally but they're actually not.

  • Well, I think it's that they see this as a wider problem than just that one blogger and so they're trying to generalize it.

that doesn't really give me any more context
  • That post is odd to me.

Because the poster is clearly an intelligent guy; seeing him engaging with Tumblr's reductive, dense set of social beliefs just seems like a waste.

But on the other hand, the argument he posits seems a lot like he's just dismissing the possibility that privilege might affect his thought processes. Maybe making a conscious decision not to be male- as if such a thing were even reasonable to attempt- might not change him internally in an immediate and obvious way, but a lifetime of self identification as and being treated as the privileged gender absolutely does have an effect.
  • “I'm surprised. Those clothes… but, aren't you…?”
He clearly recognises that being cis-male is a privileged position; what he is arguing is that simply rejecting one's gender does not intrinsically change one for the better, and that simply being male does not mean that you embrace the toxic traits of how society views masculinity. To be honest, I think that this combination of directness and fairness on the issue is the best way to address it to people who live in this kind of unproductive echo chamber.

unfortunately, i know what anonus means.
  • My dreams exceed my real life
What's up with tumblr's use of the word "normative"
  • fight. dream. horse. love.
carries less baggage than "normal" i suppose

  • My dreams exceed my real life
But that's not what it means q_q
  • I don't think I've ever seen anyone say "normative" on tumblr.
  • Sup bitches, witches, Haters, and trolls.
I think I saw it a couple times on the more intellectualish posts
  • “I'm surprised. Those clothes… but, aren't you…?”
"Normative" means enforcing the idea of a norm; "normal" means demonstrating a norm. I'm not sure if I've seen anyone substitute one for the other, but if they did, I would be cross.
  • would you say that your attitude toward language is...

    normative
  • “I'm surprised. Those clothes… but, aren't you…?”
    Goddamnit, Mo.

    DAS IST VERBOTEN.

The story in the Michigan Frog cartoon is astoundingly depressing.

    Good.

Setting aside whether or not one believes in this sort of thing in the first place, that is an incredibly silly way to frame matters. But I guess religion can be like that.
  • kill living beings
some of it i guess you can read as religious
And yes, sometimes the curses can seem petty to others. Cursing someone who cut you off in traffic may seem petty - but that person who cut you off could do it again to a school bus and kill everyone. By hexing them so their car gets a flat, you’re releasing your rage and possibly saving lives. And yes, you’re getting revenge too.
    (also dumb)

most of it just seems like they need a basic understanding of ethics, stat
What I really don’t understand about curse shaming is when people say it’s not our place to punish people. If we’re allowed to reward people then why can we not punish them, too? Who decided it is our job to play nice when we are wronged?
You might think the curse is petty but you don’t know the curser’s history - maybe their mother died in a car accident when someone cut her off.
You can make all the judgments you want on the curser - you also have to accept that your opinion and judgment doesn’t matter to them.
WHY do you care that they curse people. No, shut up about the Rede. WHY do YOU care?
    It’s their life, not yours.
like, i don't know what a rede is, but i guess the person being cursed doesn't matter? i'm guessing some people are doing curses and not really taking them as serious attacks, and then some other dork does and it spirals into whatever the hell this is

    “I'm surprised. Those clothes… but, aren't you…?”
Rede is an extremely old word literally meaning "counsel," but may also mean a kind of informal edict; it comes from the same root as read and ready. The Wiccan Rede, which applies to a number of sects, is thus: "An it harm none, do as ye will." It reflects a similar statement in Crowley's Book of the Law.

Basically, cursing someone is not to be done for petty reasons. You curse someone when they do something awful and perhaps unforgivable and you see no real recourse beyond beseeching the heavens. This is actually pretty common in religions that practice magic: You balance the scales. You do not act purely out of selfishness.

To my mind, these people are an excellent demonstration of the original meaning of the Biblical proverb, "God helps those who help themselves." Which is to say, they expect gods to help them with everything, and consequently are not deserving of it.
  • kill living beings
man i'm just thinking like, if you believe this then cursing someone is about the same as socking them in the jaw in that they're hurt, and if you're trying to justify knocking teeth out you don't say "it's my life, don't tell me what to do". unless you suck

    “I'm surprised. Those clothes… but, aren't you…?”
    Pretty much.

Unless you're deep into Palo or Candomblé, curses are generally seen as a last resort or at least a pretty big deal, and even in those faiths you really don't take that sort of thing lightly - there's no prohibition on cursing people for what most people would consider morally questionable reasons, but you have to be willing to give something up in return or risk your own well-being for that gain.

It looks to me mostly like the intersection of the teenageriest parts of teenage paganism and the teenageriest parts of teenage activism, to be honest.
  • kill living beings
i just think it's kind of interesting, ethically

sure, i hacked someone's leg apart with an axe because they cut me off, but what if they would have done a hit and run?

    “I'm surprised. Those clothes… but, aren't you…?”
Honestly, as silly as this sounds, some part of me sincerely believes or wants to believe that the way that the universe works is weird enough to accommodate the occasional flash of serendipitous synchronicity when you want something to happen and, out of the blue... things fall into place, and as unlikely as it should be, it just does.

Which is to say that I don't think magic is total bullshit, but more than that, I don't want to.

And that little part of me really resents these people, but also finds them incredibly trivial and pathetic.
  • Man is a most complex simple creature: see what he weaves, and how base his reasons for doing so.
To me, it is irrelevant if magic is real, merely that there are things you never do, just in case it does. Additionally, by being a set of rules, one can see how someone conducts themselves and treats others in how they observe these bonds.
  • kill living beings
i don't give a shit if magic is real (well, i do, but not because of this), i'm saying if curses are real these stupid bastards aren't acting like it
  • if someone tries to cast a spell that they think will kill you, but it doesn't work because magic isn't real, does that count as attempted murder?
