nah the Japanese mostly think giant robots are awesome too, it's just that Tomino wanted to do a serious war story while his superiors wanted giant robots and three and a half decades later plastic models based on these serious war stories are known for printing money
You forgot the Gigantor thing. And how the "real robot" and "super robot" thing are very, very different. But I am being really pedantic here, especially given that my exposure to giant robot shows has mainly been limited to Really Weird giant robot shows.
