I seem to have accidentally started at not-the-start, argh. I liked them both, but "Pluto Cold Acid" much much more. Now onto "Return to Hooper Bay." Not sure how I feel about the people speaking, just in general, but I chalk that up to taste. Who was the girl speaking early on?
I think I like this more. The first two I've checked out are more my style though, this one is so... bouncy, and maybe not my sort of energy. Notably the middle part.
I started liking it a fair bit by the last minute or so.
"Rain Dish" (ibid).
This on the other hand was kind of... just not something I could groove with until the audio parts, which got more fun as they increased. Granted, the relative difficulty in understanding what is being said leaves me mixed.
Misread "Crone" as "Clone" and was sad to see that I misread it. Anyway I think this is easily in my top three, definitely the one I most easily enjoyed. Very peaceful. I am also enjoying "Sunplaster," I think.
Just finished "Alien in the Rain II." Least favorite track, just not sure why. Most liked were "Endless Surface (Pioneer Mix)," and "Crone." I also forgot to say that I listened to "Thanks Mr. Shindo (pJ's Delivery Service," and I, uh, don't have much to say, sorry. I can't comment on quality or anything, obviously, it just didn't really do anything for me? All worth the time, in the end.
That background vocal snippet is a pitched-up sample of a brief vocal run in an Ethiopian blues song from, I think, the 1930s. The guy behind Passion Pit was talking about it on NPR a while back.

the reason you cannot understand what is being said is that it's backwards

that's from Serial Experiments Lain and is sort of a personal trademark.
to answer your question: it's not really clear in the show.
Thaaaat makes a lot of sense. I like that you have a personal trademark, maybe I'll like it more the more I listen to it? Still, like I said, a fun album.
Meanwhile: "SELF CONTROL!!" by Saint Snow (from Love Live! Sunshine!!).

The most famous song to ever sample an Ethiopian blues cut.
