At some point, I hope my music is half as good as his; he uses Audiotool as well and his stuff has the sort of mastery you'd expect from people on major labels.
Jackson's always been one of those artists that I don't listen to frequently but captivate me despite that; Smash is one of my favorite albums, and I haven't listened to Glow all the way through recently but if this song is any indication it very well may be a worthy followup.
(also he's my favorite Warp Records artist tbh; I like Aphex too but I got into Jackson first)
I think I get what you're talking about, but there's no real hooks or anything in this song to cling onto. I could understand that if this was going for atmosphere, but it's too busy to work as background music, either.
Van Dyke Parks did string arrangements on this, and I would rather listen to Song Cycle than this.
MC redruM 781, Jim West, Ganxsta Ridd, & Jay Rock - Status
The Bloods & Crips were exactly that. My understanding is that they mostly formed bc they were annoyed at NWA for rapping about the lifestyle that they were living and getting rich off of it. Some of these guys (especially on the Bloods side of things) still make music today.
And the Jay Rock on this track is the same one who would later sign to Kendrick Lamar's Top Dawg.

Speaking of which...
Van Dyke Parks - Vine Street
One of my favourite songs, ever.
