warning though ive never played another actual person before and am prolly pretty eh
That's a great reason to start! You should grab Lackey and the Magic plugin as soon as you can. .w.
signup for TappedOut too, you can make the decks there, download them as text documents, and then just paste them in Lackey. It's easier than actually doing it in Lackey.
let me or CC or Yarrun know if you need help with making a deck
You should prioritize Lackey, of course, since there are people who actually play it on here, but Cockatrice has better support for certain things (z.B. changing power/toughness) and the battlefield is less ambiguous.
It is, however, a pain in the butt to install, which is why Jane and CC don't use it.
My problem with making a deck is less knowing how to put a thing together and more not knowing enough about what cards are available, so i'd appreciate being pointed to lists of staple cards for various colors/strategies, nonbasic lands i should keep in mind, ect.

I think a page or two back Yarrun actually posted a graph for every dual land.
What's a staple and what isn't depends on what format you're playing.

In terms of EDH...
Check out the Titan cycle (but not Primeval, 'cause he's banned), the Praetor cycle, the Soul of X cycle, the Primordials (but not Sylvan 'cause he's banned), the colorless Eldrazi (but not Emrakul, ''), mana rocks (sol ring, mana crypt, etc.), and Lightning Greaves/Swiftfoot Boots. That's the best I can do without being deck/color specific
then i guess i'd like to know stuff for whatever format are y'all are usually playing in!
Well we mix it up.
I like Legacy (which is almost every card legal barring a few exceptions) and Modern (only cards after a certain date are legal) but Standard (the last two "blocks" of cards only) is much better for new players and I just made a Standard deck, which you can review above. It still needs work but it's also solid as is.

EDH is good but probably not the best format for a new player. Like, at all.
I know what all of the different standards are, i've read ton of stuff and played duels of the planeswalkers and stuff, it's just that i haven't gotten to play with an actual person yet
So I'm looking for playtesters for the first stages of my magic set.
It's only commons right now, I'm just trying to see if the mechanics work and everything.
I have a .rar of the lackey plugin for magic custom (which is just the vanilla magic plugin but with my cards added in) for anyone who wants to playtest for me. I'll give instructions on how we go about playtesting if enough peeps volunteer.
Went a round of EDH on Cockatrice for old time's sake. A complete mess of a match.
This guy took a swing at me with Grimgrin when I had only three strong but ability-less creatures while the other guy had Linvala and Gaddock Teeg and two or three other nasties. Yes, I killed his Nevin disk earlier, but that doesn't justify poor strategy.
The next turn, the other guy put out Avacyn and made her pro-white, effectively winning the game.
The first rule of EDH: Never let vengeance get in the way of good decisions.
I can vouch for Jhoira, Zur, Edric and Maelstrom being terrible/boring to play against (though my Jhoira deck is more about screwing with the board state than being ruthless). And I specifically remember an Azumi match where she won on turn 4 with a boring, onanistic combo, though I don't think of her as a terrible commander. I've gone against an Arcum once, but I was playing my "steal the opponent's cards" deck, so it was pretty fair. Haven't seen a Mornsong that's scary though.
Oona's boring because it translates infinite mana into an immediate wincon. Usually, with infinite mana, you have to do something else, like drawing your whole deck, to make use of it. Oona allows you to deck out all of your opponents immediately, and you can't even counter it because infinite mana means infinite activations of the ability. And finding the pieces needed for your infinite mana combo is pretty easy when you're playing the two best tutoring colors.
Honestly though, there are few commanders that are uniformly terrible. Even Maelstrom and Zur can be fun with the right cards. It's just that they're so easily abused by people who are jerks that they begin to embody jerkishness in themselves.
The one time that I actually used my Jhoira deck, I got dogpiled on because everyone assumed that I was playing the broken Jhoira deck that everyone's seen once or twice.
I distinctly remember a game ending when someone did the Mikaeus + Triskelion combo. It feels exactly like accidentally dropping an ice cream cone in the middle of eating it.
Kind of figured that Magic would do their first gay/lesbian character before their first trans one. That seems to be the standard order of introducing LGBT characters into a universe.
Unless...did they introduce a gay character without me noticing?
I changed the name slightly (Chronocut -> Chrono-Cut) and moved it to Uncommon, happy?
Yes.
I swear, I will train all of you to properly make false Magic cards. There's an art to this.
Anyway, I wanna make a deck built around getting Nicol Bolas, Planeswalker onto the field
but how?
Though I balk at the thought of inflicting Nicol Bolas on literally anybody, what you'd need to do is abuse Blue/Black Draw Spells to find him, black "cast from life points/creatures" spells to get the seven mana, and red land destruction and burn to ensure that the opponent doesn't run you over before or after playing him.
See? This kind of deck needs land destruction. Classic sign of a deck for jerks.

Yea I like Standard, Modern, and Legacy all about equally.
EDH I am not entirely sold on yet but I've only played two EDH games.
