I like the abilities. Very thematic. What with the whole "Inspiring fear in the hearts of criminals", and "thou shall not kill", and the gadgets he can pull out of his ass...
Fear doesn't really work so well for inspiring fear in the hearts of criminals, since black creatures (and artifacts) are the only ones that can block him. Unless you take the view that the run-of-the-mill lowlife that is afraid of the Batman is red rather than black.
Intimidate is what is used nowadays, but it becomes less impressive on a multi-colored creature.

I liked that Batman had fear instead if intimidate, for that reason.
The idea that it doesn't work on black creatures actually makes a fair amount of sense, especially since a great deal of Batman's Rogues Gallery likes to start shit with him.
I prefer New Phyrexia's. But that's because they're Mirrodin's artifact lands but burned to the ground and death.
...How many "low-life purse snatcher" cards are in magic already? Is there any precedent for this?
This guy was the star of my longest non-EDH game. It took 2 hours to kill Zudak. But it was totally motherfuckingly worth it.

I think that what makes him neat is that any creature that can block him would be out of comission unless your opponent untaps them somehow. Same way Batman himself can beat anyone who opposes him in theory.
Discovering Iona was one of the worst things about getting back into Magic, but winning against her a couple of turns later was one of the best.
Serra Angel is a classic, if somewhat obsoleted by Baneslayer. I've also liked playing Sunblast Angel lately, just because it usually means taking out a bunch of your opponent's creatures while leaving your own untouched.
Linvala, Keeper of Silence really fucks up my Ezuri Commander deck. It stops pretty much all of what makes the deck good, and there are like 3 cards I have there that can kill it.
Are there other really good angel creatures besides Baneslayer Angel?
Not technically an Angel Creature, but Angelic destiny's so good that packing at least three of them has won me many games.
There's also Angelic Overseer, Aegis Angel, Angelic Page (Not a winning card or anything, but its cheap and its ability is pretty good) Admonition Angel, Valkýrie Angel, etc etc
If the rules committee rules that Elbrus is a legal EDH general (which, granted, they probably won't) you could have a game pitting an Elbrus deck against a Traft deck.
if I hypothetically wanted to learn to play Magic as opposed to my usual YuGiOh TCG routine, where would be a good place to do that that wouldn't confuse the hell outta me?
Tnoph: His first ability lets you control what your opponent draws, which can be pretty devastating. His second ability (probably his most powerful) is very often equivalent to just "draw three cards", since you can just put back things you weren't going to use anyway--especially when combined with Squadron Hawk, where it turns the birds into more useful cards. His third ability stops things that were going to kill you or just lets you reuse enters-the-battlefield stuff, and I can't imagine his fourth ability being used (outside EDH I guess) but it pretty much ends the game.
The thing that really brings it all together, though, is that it's repeatable. As long as he's around, you get to do one of those things once a turn with no further investment of resources.
