The captain's flavor text is kind of generic, but its art is awesome
That's kind of the charm for me, admittedly. In a setting where everything is so out of its way to try and be scary, having a spirit who seems to have been a war hero and treat it as any of the other soldiers/knights in different planes makes him comes across as a bit of a common element for all the different sets.
But yeah, the art's the best part. Ghost Captain Jack Sparrow.
^I want to say Akroma, but I think she's too costly to work as anything but a game finisher. I still like her quite a bit. So I don't know...Wrath of God, I guess?
I can't make up my mind. Gelectrode, maybe? The only issue with that is that a creature untapping itself can be done in mono-red (Goblin Sharpshooter), so you could make an admittedly not very convincing argument that it isn't blue enough. But other than that, it's pretty much perfect.
Tough to say, but just off the top of my head, Fact or Fiction. It's extremely powerful, but not to the extent of being an instant game winner. It really rewards skill, too, on the part of both players.
^ Before Planar Chaos, the ping effect was mostly in blue, so it was contributing that as well.
I think pinging had mostly moved into red by the time Gelectrode was printed. The most recent blue pinger before Gelectrode was from Mercadian Masques, I believe.
Oblivion Ring, if just because much fun can be had with it. I can't even count the amount of times Oblivion Rings have targeted other Oblivion Rings. Which reminds me that Echoing Truth is also a lot of fun, bouncing back multiples, fun times. Two cards which it can benefit to target your own permanents.

I enjoy Vampire Nocturnus for the ability and sheer cleverness of what it does. Vampire Nighthawk is another favorite for sheer versatility and dickery of the creature.
I have a Kaalia EDH, only problem with it is that she is extremely susceptible to damage at P/T:2/2. I noticed I had quite a few clerics acting as utility creatures as well as my general, so I wondered if I could take advantage of the creature type.
A three card combo that at its best does nothing on its own except provide an extra blocker per turn? Yeah, pretty sure you're not going to get hated out at the casual table.
and you pretty much got the whole board under control, provided you can turn Kuon into an enchantment in time. And you probably have a sac outlet of some sort in there.

"I thought those types of moves were frowned on"
Combo decks don't usually completely dominate anymore than Control Decks or Aggro decks.
I suppose a well made combo deck can completely dominate a casual game, but that's true of any deck where someone built it to dominate and every one else just built a fun deck.
Not that I'd call any deck that looses "FUN". AMIRITE?! /Spike
So, played a couple of games with Nyktos and Diamonne. He ended up with Elspeth's "Everything ever is indestructible" at the beginning of the game and killing Dia. I was fucked till Venser came out of nowhere and managed to make everything unblockable and hit for 24 damage when Nyktos was at 21.
My theory that Venser solves everything continues to get more evidence. I might even write a thesis.
I remember Maro writing that the problem with Odyssey was that it was a graveyard block without there being any real reason for it to be so. Whereas of course, Gothic horror fits graveyard mechanics perfectly.

What deck are you trying to make?
Here we go, most redundant card.

Grave Pact, on the other hand, is great.

At least with that there is, hypothetically, some chance they could still win after you pull it off.
Painter's Servant + Grindstone is pretty much...well yeah, it's LAWL U DIE.

"What are you using?"
"It's a secret."
"By secret you mean Paintgrind, then no."
